ASUS PadFone 2 Overview
Asus may have the answer to the question “Why do I have a separate phone and tablet?” The Asus Padfone 2 combines a high end phone and tablet into one product. This provides a natural synergy between the phone and tablet, while removing the need to duplicate the setup, installation and purchase of apps. Transition between using the phone on its own and within the tablet is effortless. This is thanks to the revolutionary docking system produced by Asus which has been in development for 2 years (please check out the video tab). Once in tablet mode, apps automatically run tablet versions. This enables you to instantly move between the phone and tablet modes.
There have been significant improvements with the Asus Padfone 2 over its predecessor the Padfone. It is lighter (down to 649g instead of 853g), faster (it features a 1.5GHz quad-core processor) and has LTE capability. The phone has a 4.7” Super IPS display and has Corning Gorilla Glass for protection against bumps and scratches. This compares to the tablet which has a 10.1 inch display with a 1280 x 800 resolution. Both modes benefit from an anti-fingerprint coating and run Android 4.1 (JellyBean) as their operating system.
The high end features of the Asus Padfone 2 mean that it is able to effortlessly run the latest apps and games, while also being able to watch engaging media. All of these benefit from the dual handset and tablet modes. The 4.7 inch Super IPS displays ensures that your photos and movies can be fully enjoyed. Sound on both modes employs SonicMaster technology. This provides superior sound with enhanced frequency response and improved audio clarity.
The Asus Padfone 2 benefits from the inclusion of a 13 MegaPixel camera which has an f/2.4 aperture and five-element lens. Video can be recorded in 720p at a high-speed of 60fps and 100 consecutive photo captures can be taken at 6fps. This combines a 30% enhancement of colour and contrast.
4G LTE has started rolling out in the UK and the good news is the PadFone 2 it already built-in. It is compatible on 800, 1800 and 2600MHz which should cover the UK networks. Download speeds of up to 100Mbps and upload speeds of 42mbps should ensure that you have the best portable web browser experience
The Asus Padfone 2 specification means that there has been no compromise when combining the two modes. And you have a high end phone and tablet, but there are other additional benefits. Most obviously it costs less than purchasing two separate devices. It is also possible to charge the battery of the phone while it is docked. This has the advantage that you can have more talk time and usage of your handset. Typically up to 36 hours talk time when tapping into the tablet’s battery.
Impressively Asus has been able to make the combined product lighter and thinner (just 9mm thick) than the majority of other 10 inch tablets currently available. When docked the tablet mode uses the handsets data connection for its Internet connection. So there is no need to have a separate contract or to attempt to tether devices.
