BlackBerry Q5 Overview
If you have been considering obtaining a BlackBerry 10 device but have been waiting for something more budget friendly than the all-touch Z10 or QWERTY enabled Q10 then look no further! The BlackBerry Q5 has the BlackBerry manufacturing quality and design charm the company is famous for, as well as that all important QWERTY keyboard, all wrapped up in a more wallet friendly casing. With dimensions almost identical to the Q10, the Q5 casing differs mostly in its use of polycarbonate for the chassis in place of metal resulting in a lightweight finish of just 120 grams.
The Q10's AMOLED display has been replaced with a 3.1 inch IPS LCD panel in the Q5 that still offers a highly respectable 720 x 720 resolution at 328 ppi, offering pin point sharpness for web browsing, messaging and viewing pictures or video. The main camera on the Q5 is a 5 megapixel shooter, with BB10's camera features such as TimeShift all still included to help you take the perfect picture. BlackBerry have included a 2 megapixel front facing camera for video calls and self portraits!
The core BlackBerry 10 experience remains unchanged, so the Q5 will fit into any environment, consumer or enterprise, that is ready for BB10. All the standard BB10 gestures and BlackBerry Hub remain completely standard for a seamless workflow. This is underpinned by the Q5 running a more than capable 1.2 GHZ dual core Snapdragon processor and retaining 2 GB of RAM for effortless multitasking. Internal storage capacity is 8 GB with the option to expand this with microSD cards up to 32 GB. The Q5 also features a large 2180mAh battery for extended use, although, unlike previous BlackBerry devices, this is not removable.
The BlackBerry Q5 keeps the majority of the connectivity options found in other BB10 devices, with support for HSPA networks and LTE as well as dual band 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi. This continues the trend of new mid range devices being fitted with LTE connectivity, great news for the future conscious. The Q5 does not, however, have the micro HDMI connection available on the Z10 and Q10, so there is no direct video out from the device.
All in all the Q5 is a fantastic addition to the new BlackBerry 10 family and well worth considering as an upgrade for older Curve owners or those looking to get into the BlackBerry experience for the first time.
