The Nexus 5 has now been discontinued, as an alternative you may like to consider the Google Nexus 6.
Google Nexus 5 Overview
Over the past few years we have seen Google partner up with a manufacturer to produce a Nexus smartphone. Always running top of the line hardware and the most recent version of Android, totally vanilla, the Nexus range of devices are the flagships of Android being delivered the way it was intended.
Last year's Nexus 4, manufactured by LG, was massively popular and Google has seen fit to keep the partnership going with the 2013 release of the Nexus 5.
Android 4.4 KitKat
The Nexus 5 is the first device in the world to be running the new Android 4.4 version KitKat and all the most recently updated Google applications including the redesigned Maps, Gmail, Chrome, Calendar, Drive, Keep and more.
Upgrades to the hardware include the absolute top of the line processing power delivered by the quad-core 2.3 GHz Snapdragon 800. Backed up by 2 GB of RAM, this next generation system on a chip delivers the ultimate performance and multitasking functionality.
Qualcomm have also built in the upgraded Adreno 330 GPU onto the 800. Coupled with Android's recent support for the newest Open GL standards, top of the range mobile gaming is quite literally at your fingertips.
Size & Design
Being able to record and playback Full HD content as well as top flight games is nothing without a display to enjoy it on. To this end Google has included a Full HD 1920 x 1280 4.95 inch IPS LCD display.
Big enough to enjoy fine multimedia detail without being so overly large as to be cumbersome, the screen size is the best compromise in a sea of ever larger devices. Corning Gorilla Glass 3 has also been included for ultimate scratch resistance.
At only 8.59 mm thick and 130 grams, LG has managed to keep the profile of the Nexus 5 as svelte as possible. A soft matte finish has been applied to the back of the Nexus 5 as well, this enhances grip and avoids it sliding on gloss surfaces.
In today's world, the ability to connect to all sorts or other devices and accessories is an absolute necessity for a top tier device. Alongside supporting Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac and 4G LTE, the Nexus 5 has a complete suite of entertainment connectivity options.
NFC and Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy are present for one-touch pairing of accessories and contactless payments. You will also find Wi-Fi direct Miracast for screen mirroring and video streaming with compatible screens and dongles.
An 8 megapixel camera module has been fitted to the back of the Nexus 5. With Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) technology, you can be more sure of capturing blur free images, even when snapping moving objects. New lens technology is included for increased light capture for better performance in low light.
HDR has found its way into many top end smartphone cameras and the Nexus 5 is not to be outdone here. HDR captures a number of images in quick succession and aggregates the colours and brightness to give you the best possible outcome,be that deep colours during the day or as much brightness and as little noise as possible at night.
Android 4.4 also keeps the Photosphere mode introduced in 4.3, allowing you to take a full 360 degree panoramic shot.
