HTC One Max Overview

HTC One MaxLooking to capture the growing trend and demand for plus size Android handsets, HTC have expanded their award winning HTC One into the new and improved HTC One Max.

With the same sumptuous design cultivated from aluminium, the HTC One Max provides more of the allure that has wowed critics since the One was first announced earlier this year. Favourites such as HTC BlinkFeed, Zoe, BoomSound and TV all return, with a few added surprises thrown in to the mix.

Super size phones aren't for everyone but if you're in the market for one, the HTC One Max finds a spot to settle in right between the competition with its 5.9" Full HD 1080 x 1920 LCD3 screen. The curved aluminium shell of the One series has always been a joy to hold and the One Max continues this precedent; measuring in at 164.5 x 82.5 x 10.29 mm, the One Max's sleek manufacturing does well to mask the handset's true size.

The smartphone screen is truly your portal to a connected world and the HTC One Max doesn't disappoint. The full HD 5.9" (373 ppi) LCD3 display will make your content come alive. No need to fear scratches either: Corning Gorilla Glass 3 will protect the One Max screen from harm.

A first for the One series is a removable back cover, giving you access to the SIM card slot and support for micro SD cards up to 64GB.

HTC One MaxOne of the best, yet least talked about, features of the original HTC One was HTC BoomSound. Part of the now iconic design includes two powerful front mounted speakers, with audio enhancement through BoomSound that delivers easily the best standalone audio from a Smartphone. The speakers return on the face of the HTC One Max, with improvements made to BoomSound which will further enhance the quality when playing back your favourite tracks, videos or recorded material.

Also resurfacing is HTC's UltraPixel technology. Foregoing the traditional and ongoing 'megapixel war', HTC have invested time in researching and developing an UltraPixel sensor. Each pixel being two microns across allows for a richer and more vibrant capture of light; delivering one of the best ever camera phones in low light conditions. Combined with the HTC Zoe software for developing short stories of your day's imaging prowess, the HTC One Max could be the best of the bunch for taking pictures in the phablet range.

What's new?

HTC One Max fingerprint scannerAndroid is developed and updated quickly and HTC have been sure to keep up, ensuring the One Max is up to date with 4.3 Jelly Bean. With this comes support for autocompleting phone numbers and contact names, Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy , OpenGL ES 3.0 support for high performance games graphics, WiFi direct for screen mirroring, additional languages and restricted profiles with multiple user support.

With a new Android also comes a new Sense - HTC have updated their skin to Sense 5.5. The layout and style remain familiar, with HTC Blinkfeed taking priority. Updates include the ability to switch off Blinkfeed should you wish, a 'do not disturb' feature and rearranging the icons in the notifications shade. The camera has been amended with a dual capture mode for taking front and rear images simultaneously, useful in video chat too, as well as a true Photosphere clone from Android 4.3.

Fingerprint scanners are about to make a resurgence in smartphones, they have been available in mobile tech such as laptops for some time, as well as in a few Android devices of yesteryear such as the Motorola Atrix. Apple's recent inclusion of a scanner in the iPhone 5s may have sparked the industry to rethink the idea that was originally cast aside and the One Max will be the first major Android handset with a scanner since the Atrix. You can even assign 3 separate fingers to launch different apps from the lockscreen.

At the cutting edge of connectivity, the One Max not only has support for super fast GSM connectivity with a 4G LTE radio, HTC have also seen fit to update other areas including Wi-Fi direct for screen sharing (Miracast) and Bluetooth (4.0) Low Energy. HTC also remain staunch proponents of the apt-X Bluetooth profile for the best possible audio reproduction over Bluetooth compared to other leading manufacturers. NFC rounds off the One Max, so you can enjoy one touch pairing to all your favourite compatible accessories.

None of this would be useful without a battery worthy of powering this device and the One Max comes prepared with a 3300 mAh cell to deliver a full day's performance, even when pushed to the limits.

(Disclaimer: HTC sent me this device to test)
The One Max is a great device for those who love the feel of the HTC One but want that same experience on a larger display, although a phone of this size won’t appeal to everyone. I also can’t fault the battery life of the 3300mAh battery; it lasted for two days straight under fairly heavy usage without a recharge, I'm now leaving my battery bank at home!
It's great for churning through videos and music; I use it as a Netflix streaming hub, I use an MHL cable to connect it to my TV if I want it on that, but why would I when I have the large display of the One Max that has a display the same resolution of that TV!
It also has the tried and tested UltraPixel camera, which offers great stills and video quality despite its resolution.
The fingerprint scanner is a nice addition, but in practice, it's quite awkwardly positioned; that given, it is very fast at reading my fingerprint, as fast as my Thinkpads fingerprint scanner!
My final words on the One Max is that it's a brilliant device with very few flaws, I'd recommend it to anyone who is on the look out for a phone and tablet replacement!
