Nokia Lumia 520 Overview
With the Lumia 520 you get a taste of Nokia’s latest technology at an extremely reasonable price point. The Finnish company has done a superb job in offering a cheap phone that doesn’t compromise on quality.
Small compared to some of the giants that now lead the smartphone market, the 4” IPS LCD screen of the Lumia 520 would itself have been a market leader only a couple of years ago. Whether you want it to be housed by one of Nokia’s vibrant colour offerings or the more traditional black or white is your choice. However, the colour that you opt for initially is not permanent - the snap on covers (sold separately) can be switched as you please to give the 520 a different look everyday.
Many budget handsets come with the shortfall of not being able to offer much in terms of storage options. That’s not the case with the Lumia 520 though; it’s got 8GB internal storage and accepts microSD cards up to the size of 64GB. Nokia has even included 7GB of free cloud storage through Microsoft SkyDrive, so there’s plenty of room to store music, movies, photos and any other file types that you have a need for.
Nokia has worked very hard to develop features that differentiate its handsets from other Windows Phone competitors, and several of these are included with the 520. The super sensitive screen technology that was introduced in the Lumia 920 provides an extremely responsive display and can even be used with gloves. No need to take them off to change tracks when you’re out and about in the cold.
Music is another aspect of its portfolio that Nokia can be proud of and you’ll no doubt appreciate the attention that it’s received when you give Nokia music a try. It’s ad-free and no registration is required, a rarity for software services these days! The included free tier let’s you listen to pre-selected play lists, four of which can be downloaded to the device to save on data usage from streaming. If you want to step the service up a level, you can purchase Nokia music for under £5 per month. This provides unlimited downloads of play lists, track skips and lyrics.
Another strong point for Nokia is navigation and there are feature aplenty included with the 520. Nokia HERE Maps is combined with Nokia HERE Drive to give you turn by turn directions to your destination. If it’s public transport that you’re using for your journey, Nokia HERE Transit plots the quickest route for you. This is supported by not only GPS, but the Russian equivalent as well, GLONASS. That’s two satellite systems to help you get where you need to go, as quickly as possible.
Nokia has also developed very impressive supporting features for the cameras in its Lumia handsets. There’s a 5MP snapper included with the 520, which comes with features such as Cinemagraph and Smart Shoot. The former enables you to animate elements of a still photograph, while the latter helps you to create the best photo from a series of shots. There’s also a panorama lens to assist in taking extra wide-angled photos.
While the Lumia 520 is what’s known as a budget handset, but it’s cheap price tag is in no way reflected by the build quality and features that it offers.
