Samsung ATIV Tab Overview
The Samsung ATIV Tab is the first tablet from Samsung to run the new Windows RT operating system from Microsoft. Windows RT is the slick new mobile version of Windows 8 designed specifically for mobile devices with ARM processors. Windows RT works exclusively with applications available from the Windows Store, a slight departure from traditional Windows although still offering a powerful user experience for a tablet computer.
Windows RT features the dual desktop mode and "Metro style" interface available on Windows 8 Pro with applications able to be launched from the use of the Metro live tiles or from shortcuts on the desktop mode. Pre installed software includes Microsoft's updated Internet Explorer 10, Office Home and Student RT (with Word, Excel, Powerpoint and OneNote) and seamless integration for Xbox multimedia services with Xbox Music and Video replacing the Windows Media Player familiar on previous Wnidows versions. Other installed applications provide a comprehensive weather report, travel information and intuitive calendar and mail clients for organisation.
Using your ATIV Tab in desktop is still possible with touch input alone although this is where Windows RT comes into its own with full sized USB port providing support for USB peripherals or a hub to allow for a more standard desktop like environment when not on the move. Among the other physical connections are a 3.5mm headphone socket and a micro HDMI port for connecting and outputting to a high definition display.
The hardware under the hood packs a punch too. The now familiar 1.5GHz dual core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor is running the show alongside 2GB of RAM allowing for a fast and responsive interface even when pushed to the limits of multitasking in RT. The 10.1 inch HD display delivers a crisp image when browsing, playing back video or taking pictures and Samsung's superior screen technology offers fantastic brightness and viewing angles.
ATIV Tab features a 5 megapixel camera, impressive for a current Windows RT tablet allowing for high quality pictures and video recording in 720p. Samsung have yet to overlay the reasonable stock Windows RT camera interface with their own, but if this happens in any future updates then the high quality imaging features present in Samsung's Android will then be available. A 1.9 megapixel front facing camera is also present for Skype or other video calls.
Samsung have managed to fit a huge 8200 mAh battery into the ATIV Tab's skinny 265.8 x 168.1 x 8.9 mm frame which will easily offer a solid day's use if managing the screen brightness well. The provided 32 GB flash storage can be expanded by up to another 64 GB with a micro SD card. The ATIV Tab also has hardware support for NFC; whilst this hasn't been fully realised in Windows RT yet it is good to see that Samsung have anticipated future updates and included the functionality. ATIV Tab is also fully Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 compliant as well aand supports USB hosting.
