Every year, the iPad gets a little bit thinner and a bit more powerful. There hasn't been a big addition to the range since the introduction of the iPad Mini, so the iPad Pro marks something of a change in direction for Apple.
With a 12.9 inch screen, the iPad Pro gives you a huge amount of space to get to work - edit 4K video, design presentations, immerse yourself completely in movies or games - with this much screen space you can be fully engaged.
This massive screen is the most dense Retina display that Apple has developed, with a resolution of 2732 x 2048. A new Multi-Touch system improves your interaction with the display, plus redesigning the screen components has led to more lifelike colours and deeper blacks.
With the iPad Pro being an obvious choice to watch movies and play games, the sound has also been significantly upgraded. The new chassis design takes into account a four speaker system with each housing machined directly into the aluminium unibody for better back volume, depth of sound and frequency ranges for the best sound of any iPad.
The new Multi-Touch system isn't just designed for your fingers though, it has also been designed with Apple's new Pencil accessory in mind, being able to instantly recognise and discern the distinct pressures that the Pencil can apply.
Apple Pencil has a vast array of sensors that work in tandem with iPad Pro. This makes for an intuitive experience with almost no latency between pressing to the screen and seeing a response, as well as being able to draw and transition between several different line weights based on pressure.
You can even tilt the Apple Pencil to its edge to create shading and gradient effects similar to a physical graphite pencil or charcoal.
For a full professional approach to your work, you can also use the Smart Keyboard. With generously spaced keys with just the right amount of travel, the Smart Keyboard is a lightweight addition to improve productivity.
The Smart Keyboard is manufactured with a two-way conductive material woven into the fabric. This allows for simultaneous flow of power and data without the need for any cables or switches. Simply attach to the Smart Connector that sits flush on the iPad Pro for instant use.
Power & Performance
The first Apple product to use the A9X chip, the iPad Pro is a powerhouse of function and capability. The 64-bit chip offers a desktop class level of performance and multitasking capabilities, with the M8 motion coprocessor, graphics processor and storage controller all working together to create a seamlessly quick system with low power consumption.
Compared to the iPad Air 2, which is already a fast machine, the iPad Pro has 1.8 times the performance levels. This allows for simple transitioning between complex tasks such as rendering 3D models and editing 4K video.
The new A9X processor is so fast, Apple had to redesign the storage controller in order to handle the information correctly. With a whole new memory architecture, read and write speeds have been massively improved, allowing you to save and open large files quicker than ever before on an iPad.
There are two excellent cameras on the iPad Pro. The main iSight camera has an 8 megapixel resolution with excellent precision optics. With an upgraded image signal processor and optimised software in the iOS 9 system, more detail can be captured than any previous iPad camera.
Burst mode allows for up to 10 pictures per second, with iPad able to detect smiles and blinks to suggest the best images. Video can be shot at 120 fps for super slow motion effects.
The front-facing FaceTime HD camera has also been improved, with larger pixels in the refined sensor for better low-light performance.
Once you've taken images or video, you can also edit them! Apple include a full editing suite to adjust exposure, coulour, brightness and contrast, as well as applying filters, stickers and animations.
When it comes to security, Touch ID has you covered. With Apple's own encryption based security, you can use your fingerprints as the ultimate password.
Created as part of the initial set up procedure, all you need to do is press a finger to the home button on your iPad Pro to unlock the screen. The sapphire crystal coating is strong and resilient, taking a perfect image and resisting damage due to wear over time.
You can use Touch ID for more than just unlocking the screen though. You can use your fingerprint to automatically sign into secure apps and other systems that require authorisation.
You can also verify your credentials to make one touch purchases in iTunes, iBooks, App Store and with Apple Pay at participating retailers.
iPad Pro is available as both a WiFi only model and a Cellular enhanced version. WiFi capabilities are now twice as fast as in previous iPads and the cellular option can take advantage of high speed 4G LTE networks (where available).
With 20 LTE bands in the cellular version, iPad Pro is practically global, with compatibility across many carriers in almost every developed country in the world!
With new multitasking features, iOS9 helps you get the most out of using your new iPad. Slide Over, Split View and Picture in Picture all help you multitask. Quicktype features are also available to help make typing easier with cut and paste shortcuts available right on screen.
Slide Over lets you slide a window open in from the side with a second app. Perfect for responding to a text or email without completely leaving what you were doing.
Split View gives you a 50/50 split of two separate apps at once. Scroll around a map whilst looking up a hotel's website. Edit a document while having the reference open at the same time! Split View makes it easier to focus.
Picture in Picture works brilliantly for FaceTime, scaling down the screen to a small corner so you can continue the video call while working elsewhere. The same can be done while watching videos!
