The Archos Smart Home is a kit comprising of 6 connected objects and a Smart Tablet.

The tablet acts as a control station for the components that work together to allow you to stay connected and in touch with the activities in your home, office or location of choice.

The components included in this kit include:

  • 1 x Archos Smart Home Tablet
  • 2 x Archos Mini Cam
  • 2 x Archos Weather Tag
  • 2 x Archos Movement Tag

Using the Smart Home Tablet or app for your Android or iOS mobile device, you can log into the network of connected peripherals and monitor activity wherever you have the system setup.

The kit contains all you need for a basic setup, but optional extras, including a Motion Ball, Siren and Smart Plug, which can extend the systems capabilities and the control you have. You can add multiple movement tags, cameras and more until you have your perfect setup.

Configure the system just the way you like it and the way that works best for your environment.

From the basic on screen configuration for monitoring, to having an email including a picture emailed to you each time a movement tag is activated the system has the scope to be configured and managed in a way that is most useful to yourself.

The programs editor lets you configure this in just 3 simple steps; Trigger, Action and Schedule opening up infinite possibilities of automation. You can even have a programme based on a programme you have created.

The extensive app gives lots of controls and data to you, from live monitoring to logs of what happened when and even how much battery is left in each of the components.

With the exception of the tablet, all the components are really quite small with a weather tag not much bigger than a £2 coin and the mini cameras about the size of a golf ball.

The included components are powered by lithium batteries which last up to a year. Whilst batteries will need to be replaced over time, it means no awkward caballing, discrete and versatile positioning of each item.

Using the Bluetooth Smart standard power consumption is low and the connected objects have a range of up to 20 meters indoors.

Archos Mini Cam – Similar size to a ping pong or golf ball, the camera has a wide angle lens to capture more of the scene that it is shooting. Magnetically attached to a mounting plate, the camera can be positioned at virtually any angle or position and can even be used outside as it has been waterproofed.

Images or video can be captured by the camera and wirelessly transferred back to the Archos Smart Tablet by low energy Bluetooth.

Read more about the mini cam or purchase separately here.

Archos Weather Tag – Completely wireless this small sensor monitors the environment in which it is located; feeding back information such as temperature and humidity. Weatherproofed, this compact component can be placed in most location, wirelessly transmitting data back to the Archos Connected Home App.

Read more about the weather tag or purchase separately here.

Archos Movement Tag – Designed to notify you when a door, drawer, window or similar has been opened.

Packaged with magnetic fixtures, the tiny and discrete movement tag comes in two pieces, one larger for fixed placement and a smaller slave piece to be stuck to the moving part.

Like the other components, it is powered by a lithium battery that lasts for up to 1 year and can be programmed to best suit your needs.

Read more about the movement tag or purchase separately here.

Archos Smart Home Tablet – All of the components mentioned, along with the optional additional components report back to the main hub, the Archos Smart Home Tablet.

A standalone Android tablet, it has been designed to sit on a tablet or desktop much like a digital photo frame may do to allow for regular and convenient access to content on its 7” touchscreen.

The Smart Home Tablet will do everything expected of an Android Jelly Bean device. Being Google certified brings access to core Google services such as Gmail and Maps as well as the Play Store for downloading new content.

With the ability to expand the storage through micro SD and USB hosting for connecting portable hard drives, Archos want you to be able to utilise the Smart Home Tablet as a home media and file server. Built in support for DLNA sharing will allow any DLNA certified device to find the Smart Home Tablet on your home network and access content in shared areas.

The Smart Home Tablet is simple yet stylish and fits in well with any modern aesthetic. The Archos Connected Home application Gateway is installed on all Smart Home Tablets. By opening the app, you can view the status of any one of the Archos Connected Home products you have in your home. Not only can you check on their status, you can also update their settings and create custom scenarios to link them together.

The Archos Smart Home is a powerful cost effective solution. There are many systems out there that can monitor the weather, record what goes on in your home and track items; however they are generally independent systems that are considerably more expensive and bulkier than the Smart Home kit from Archos.

The Smart Home package is one that anyone can pick up and install with relative ease. Little technical knowledge is required, nor do you need to have a big budget.

Without doubt the Smart Home is the first plausible solution for making the average home smarter.

As a consultant to the SmartHome / Connected Home market I have played with almost each and every Smart Home system you could think of.

I have purchased the Archos starter kit because I couldn't believe that so much value can be included in such an aggressive price. And the Archos delivers big time.

The heart of the KIT is desktop kind of an Android tablet. I call it Desktop since it is meant to be standing in your living room / kitchen / bedroom and not being carried around as you would with a tablet. The concept is kind of cool as the tablet serves me as a news reading station in the morning while taking my coffee and my wife uses it to stream music (radio).

The Archos HOME app is the heart of the Smart Home solution. The app enables you to pair devices, sort them into rooms, operate them, set programs (scheduled operations) and update the firmware of the devices, OTA.

The kits comes with BATTERY OPERATED VGA cameras, two weather stations and two Motion sensors which are actually Door / Windows sensors with the addition of a vibration sensor inside, so these can be used also in order to secure objects and get alerts when these objects (art, gun, etc.) move.

being battery operated, the cameras, which are really tiny, do not provide continuous video stream. Instead, they provide you with the ability to request on-demand image / video clip. The cameras have VGA resolution but that's good enough to see who is at the door, that your child came back from school, that your lone parent is doing ok, etc.

Installation is easy and quick. Defining programs is very easy and intuitive with the Archos HOME application.

Big benefit is that all of the peripherals (not sure about the cameras) are said to be suitable for outdoor installation.

All in all I love the system. My only remark is that build quality could be better but for the price, it definitely provides huge value.

Living in Israel, I do not see much use for the weather stations.

Bought this device! Happy as an elephant! Everything works, but that's a small problem with the batteries. Their is not long enough. But still a wonderful device. Now at least I know when my kids came Jomo when gone. What tvoritsya home until we have as a dog behaves. Well, in all other respects perfectly. What is missing is a couple of cameras and a pair of motion sensors and door opening. I'll have to buy more when they are on sale.

Great "smart house", easy installation, all is clear. Build quality is lame, but for the price satisfactory. The tablet can be used for reading news or watching those. The rest of the works on hurray, I like. I would like to buy more parts for it. Everything else happy.

Lots of potential in this initial kit. A quick and easy way to monitor aspects of your home and daily life. Scripting add ons can also extend options and make this into an even more powerful home automation system.

I bought the Archos Smart Home and have been using the system for about a month or so.

As previous reviewers have stated, as far as build quality goes you are getting what you pay for but I believe the quality is adequate for most people, it certainly is fine for my uses.

The first thing to do is to get a supply of the watch cell batteries as I found the ones that shipped with it died fairly quickly.

You can program the hub and I have a few programs that run daily, one takes a picture of the entry to my home if the side gate is opened and another will email me if the temperature in my conservatory gets too high. I intend on linking this to the smart socket and switch on the aircon automatically when I can buy one of the sockets.

The tablet should be considered as a hub that you leave on in a room, you can serve music and video from it if you want be mine is used solely as a monitor for the smart devices. The tablet screen is not great so it's not going to replace an ipad or my surface but for the money it does the job!

You can connect an ios or android device to the hub as well so you are not limited to the hub, additionally you can remotely connect to the hub so you can monitor things when away from the home.

I had some issues with the firewall\port settings on my hub initially but the updates to the system having be rolling out fairly fast and this problem seems to be solved. Additionally firmware updates have been sent out, the hub picks up on these and remotely sends the firmware update to the devices around the room.

Archos seem to be developing more smart bluetooth devices so you can control lights, sockets, blinds. I expect eventually most things in the home will be connected to some sort of smart hub and this is certainly a great start to get in on the tech early on in it's development.

All in all I'm please with my purchase.
