The KEYone is the BlackBerry smartphone that many wanted when the original Passport launched. BlackBerry keyboard with Android.
It might be nearly 2 years since the Passport launched and the KEYone is not exactly like it, but very similar.
Unlike most of the all-touch smartphones other manufacturers are producing, including BlackBerry with the DTEK50 and 60, the KEYone is designed to target those who need, want and love the physical keyboard.
A 4.5” HD resolution and resistant touchscreen sits above the 4 row QWERTY keyboard to give you the best of both worlds.
This is no standard keyboard, clever technology that we have seen previously on BlackBerry devices has been brought to the KEYone. The keyboard itself supports gestures.
Swipe up and down, left and right to navigate through documents, web pages and user interface. No need to touch the screen.
This is a smart keyboard.
Program each key to instantly bring up contacts and apps you use most often. Program them how you like. ‘F’ for Facebook or ‘C’ for contacts or calendar, the choice is yours.
When typing, the intelligent software predicts the next word and shows it at the bottom of the screen, a simple flick up and the word appears in your text. Create and edit faster and smarter with the KEYone.
The spacebar also doubles up as a front facing fingerprint sensor to give an extra level of security to the device.
Android Operating System
Android 7.1 (Nougat) is pre-installed on the KEYone which gives access to all of the popular Google services and apps through the Play Store.

Keep life organised with BlackBerry Hub. This unified inbox is an irreplaceable tool for consolidating all of your messages in one place. Whether it's emailing, calendar, social or phone calls. BlackBerry Calendar is the best out-of-box calendar experience on Android. When it’s time to join a call, KEYone presents you with a simple Join Now button that automatically dials you in. When receiving or creating meeting invites, you are presented with adjacent or conflicting appointments.
Whether it is Gmail, Exchange or Outlook email accounts, these can be easily added configured and used on the KEYone.
You wouldn’t put money in a bank that didn’t lock its safe. Or leave the doors of your home unlocked at night, would you?
Having a smartphone that doesn’t take your privacy seriously is the equivalent.
BlackBerry ensures that how you share the private details of your life, your location, your pictures, your texts, are your decision.
The DTEK app is your go to control panel to manage your devices security levels and protect against possible threats.
Security is a serious concern for BlackBerry and the KEYone, like the DTEK series before it, will receive monthly security patches and updates. Security isn’t something they tack on, it’s fully integrated into their device hardware and OS.
BlackBerry understands that every second counts and convenience is key. That’s why KEYone comes with a customisable BlackBerry Convenience Key. With the press of a button, the Convenience Key provides quick access to your most used applications, tasks and more. The Convenience Key is also usable as mute key when on an active call.
Superb Photo Quality
The KEYone might appear to be focused all on the serious side of life, but the 12-megapixel rear and 8-megapixel front camera allow you to capture stunning images.
A 6-element f2.0 lens with HDR is mounted on the back of the handset. It has fast focus lock, and Phase Detection Auto Focus, image stabilisation, dual tone LED flash and 4x digital zoom.
Recording 4K video at 30 frames per second too, this camera is something special and will capture moments with ease and in great detail.
This is paired a front facing 8-megapixel camera with a fixed focus f2.2 aperture.
The large 1.125um sized pixel lets in lots of light and with an 84-degree field of wide lots of the scene can be captured.
HD video recording is possible at 30 frames per second and the screen will light up as an LCD flash if required.
Storage & Processing Power
Be it images, documents, applications or media the KEYone has 32GB of internal storage with the ability to add a microSD card into the provided slot and expand the memory to a theoretical maximum of 2TB.
3GB of RAM keeps things ticking along nicely, doing away with lag and slow down, in conjunction with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor.
Not ‘technically’ the best processor, the 625 chip is ‘best’ at offering performance and power optimisation and that is important when you are working away from power.
All Day Battery
Being a power efficient processor and with a battery intelligent operating system, the KEYone should perform well, particularly when you consider the 3505mAh battery is a decent size.
When power is low, the Quick Charge 3.0 technology can come in handy for speedy replenishment of power and when things are really bad, take advantage of the software tweaks that allow 50% charge in just 36 minutes.
A smartphone with so many features as already described can only boast more right?!
4G connectivity, WiFi support for both 2.4 and 5GHz frequencies, Bluetooth 4.2 and USB type-c connectivity.
There is also an FM radio and NFC compatible with Android Pay.
The BlackBerry KEYone is a smartphone that does a lot.
All of this built into a strong aluminium frame with a soft-touch textured back cover for rigidity and in hand comfort.
