The CAT S60 is a smartphone like no other. It is the world’s first smartphone that has an integrated thermal camera.
Setting itself apart from other products on the market the S60 appeals to those with specific use cases.
Those use cases can include underwater use to a depth of 5 meters.
Provided without a SIM card and no contract or tariff with the phone, the S60 is supplied factory unlocked.
This means you can use a SIM card from a network provider of your choice. The handset it branded only with the manufacturers logos, in this case CAT and no network branding.
The CAT S60 has 2 x nano sized SIM slots, making this a Dual SIM phone.
As such, it means you can have one or two SIMs in the phone at any one time. Use both a personal and work SIM card in the same phone or maybe a local and international SIM, the choice is yours. Or if you need only one SIM slot, leave the other empty.
The S60 is available in one memory and colour variant only. This is the black and silver colour as shown in the images, with an internal memory of 32GB.
A smartphone means different things to different people. For some it is a tool for business, for others it is a simple communication tool, for others it helps them embrace a social lifestyle.
The S60 is a smartphone that has a defined purpose and will appeal to a niche, but does so in a way we have not seen of many other products.
CAT phones have long been associated with the trades, such as builders and plumbers amongst others, but also suited to those who lead an active outdoors lifestyle.
The S60 is different in that it is waterproof to a depth of 5 meters for up to 1 hour and built into this phone is a thermal imaging camera.
This is the world’s first smartphone with an integrated thermal camera, and the world’s most waterproof smartphone.
FLIR are the global leader in thermal imaging technology and it is their technology that is built right into the S60.
A multitude of use cases can be thought of, including but not limited to; detecting heat loss around windows and doors; spotting moisture and missing insulation; identifying over-heating electrical appliances and circuitry; and seeing in complete darkness.
The thermal camera visualises heat that is invisible to the naked eye, highlighting temperature contrasts. It can pick up heat and measure surface temperatures from a distance of up to 50 to 100 feet, and see through obscurants such as smoke, enabling a huge range of use cases for building professionals, utility workers, outdoor sports enthusiasts, and emergency first responders to name but a few.
The Cat S60 is also waterproof to a depth of up to 5 meters for up to one hour, allowing it to be used as an underwater camera, pushing the boundaries of mobile technology, and how and where it’s used.
The MIL Spec 810G rating which involves drop tests from a height of 1.8 meters is also retained on this phone.
The stylish strengthened die cast frame helps with the strength and ensuring the S60 does not look at all bad.
Remember this is a phone, so calls, text messages are core to what the S60 can offer.
Powered by a powerful processor and coupled with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal memory this comprehensive mobile device is practical in domestic and professional environments.
The operating system is Google’s Android platform and the S60 runs version 6.0 (Marshmallow) out of the box.
Further refining an already capable and powerful OS, one of the key features of Android 6 is ‘Doze’ that intelligently saves battery life when the device and apps are not in use.
You will see excellent usage and screen on times, even when you take into account all the great features of this phone and the fact that it does have a 4.7” touchscreen display that is toughened with Corning Gorilla Glass 4 and has wet finger and glove support.
An additional benefit includes the ability to control the permissions of applications, so you remain in the control; turn app permissions off and on when you want, rather than when the app suggests is best.
Being an Android smartphone you of course have access to Google's full suite of applications and Google Play for downloading more. Enjoy Gmail, Drive, Maps, Calendar, Translate and more including Google Play Games, Books, Music & Movies.
Whether you are sharing images captured on the 13 megapixel rear camera, documents created and stored on the internal memory or checking in on what is happening around the world, 4G and WiFi connectivity mean that in most instances you are you can remain connected to the world around you.
A unique smartphone with some very powerful use case scenarios the S60 from CAT can be obtained from CAT approved retailer Clove Technology.
CAT also produce a range of rugged, waterproof smartphones without thermal imaging. For rugged smartphones with modern capabilities at more affordable prices, check out the range below.

If you want the best rugged Android in 2016...you want the Cat S60. http://blog.clove.co.uk/2016/06/17/cat-s60-review/
First I will get my one gripe with this handset out of the way: CAT and Bullitt went and created the most waterproof phone ever made...and then decided not only to exclude wireless charging, but to rely on nothing more than a flimsy cap which will be used almost daily to maintain the waterproofing. There is no additional waterproofing on the USB port, confirmed by manufacturer. I think this will prove to be a huge mistake, and is the reason I'm not treating this as a waterproof device; I have no faith that it will stay that way long term. Having said that, I'm still happy to give it a wash under the tap when it's dirty - but you won't catch me swimming with it.
Now that is out of the way: this is still the greatest piece of hardware I have ever owned.
It looks and feels like a device in this price range should; a rugged phone that still looks professional during corp meetings etc but can take a beating when it neads to.
You will either love or hate the design, but there is no denying that it is eye catching...and people lose their minds over the thermal camera.
Looks aside, it feels absolutely amazing in-hand. SO solid, it just exudes quality workmanship. In my work, the addition of physical bottom buttons is absolutely amazing.
Specs-wise, cat have chosen not to chase the dragon; you get enough to play games, do everything smartphone related and run android 6.01 with no lags, but not enough to have to charge your battery every single day. At present, I am easily getting 2 days of battery with about 6.5 hours of screen-on time.
Once the wifi drain issue is fixed in android 6.01, and the battery has had some time to hit its stride, I am expecting this to increase even further as WIFI is currently eating about 30% of the battery even though it is mostly turned off. This is an android issue and nothing to do with CAT.
I was expecting to be disappointed with the screen resolution, but once I booted the device I was pleasantly surprised: the resolution is perfect for the screen size, it is bright and clear and image reproduction is pretty damn good. I'm happy to take the battery life benefit of a 720p screen on a device like this and I think they made the right call here.
Cameras: The standard shooter is lightyears better than I was expecting based on the professional reviews. It sucks in really low-light but so do 99% of camera phones, but in daylight you are getting crystal clear, true-to-life pictures that are easily better than what I could generate on my galaxy S5.
The thermal camera is slow and low resolution, but it is absolutely amazing to be packing this technology in your pocket at all times.
Cat have applied a lot of small touches to this device that just make it sing. The textured surface of the power button enables you to orientate the phone in the dark, and the function button bound to flashlight is a must-have for me and works a treat.
If you are looking for a phone that will give you a serious nugget feeling every time you pick it up or pull it out of your pocket, this is the one. This is the first time in a long time that I've bought a phone outright and felt like I absolutely got my moneys worth.
Now, if somebody could root the device I would be over the moon!
The moment you take this phone out of the box you know that this isn't a toy. Huge battery, good performance, first FLIR camera, decent screen, good performance. Only gripe is that it doesn't have wireless charging. The port is waterproof but will it be after I open it 600 times? Time will tell
