Buy CAT S61 Unlocked (SIM Free/UK)
Following on from the incredibly impressive S60, the all-new Cat S61 takes what made that phone stand out and improves on every aspect.
With many modern smartphones, it can difficult to really see the differences between them. Often they have similar specification and features, with only really the design to set them apart.
The CAT S61 is radically different. It has been designed specifically as a tool for tradespeople, but would also suit anybody looking for a thoroughly rugged smartphone with useful features beyond the norm.
Just like its predecessor, Cat S61 has an integrated FLIR Thermal Camera. This time around it has been improved with a greater temperature range and image resolution. Also included are a VOC indoor air quality meter and humidity sensor. Rounding off the array of sensors is an accurate laser-assisted area and distance measurement lens.
Of course, it is also very tough; Gorilla Glass 5 adorns the screen panel and the whole casing is made from strengthened die-cast aluminium. The MIL-SPEC 810G & IP68 ratings certify the phone as able to withstand drops of up to 1.8 metres and survive being submerged in up to 3 metres of water for 1 hour.

A smartphone means different things to different people. For some, it is a tool for business, for some a simple communication tool, and for others, it helps them embrace a social lifestyle.
With the previous S60, CAT created a phone with a defined purpose, which appealed to a niche. This was done in a way not seen before with many other products.
CAT phones have long been associated with the trades, such as builders and plumbers amongst others, but also suited to those who lead an active outdoors lifestyle.
In the CAT S61, they have refined this design and taken it to a new level.
The new improved FLIR thermal camera benefits from a greater temperature range, now, -20 to 400. Improved MSX image resolution and an enhanced app with Live Streaming of thermal images.
FLIR is the global leader in thermal imaging technology and it is their technology that is built right into the S61.
A multitude of use cases can be thought of, including but not limited to; detecting heat loss around windows and doors; spotting moisture and missing insulation; identifying over-heating electrical appliances and circuitry, and seeing in complete darkness.
The thermal camera visualises heat that is invisible to the naked eye, highlighting temperature contrasts. It can pick up heat and measure surface temperatures from a distance of up to 50 to 100 feet, and see through obscurants such as smoke, enabling a huge range of use cases for building professionals, utility workers, outdoor sports enthusiasts, and emergency first responders to name but a few.
Being able to measure distance and area in an easy and convenient way is important to most trade people. Having to use a traditional tape measure for this purpose can result in inaccurate readings. So, laser-assisted measurement readers have become popular in recent years. Having one built-in to your phone means it is always in your pocket.
The CAT S61 also features an indoor air quality sensor from Sensirion. This has the ability to alert users to high levels of indoor pollutants (Volatile Organic Compounds or VOCs). So, they can be aware if their working environment is a potential risk.
The MIL-SPEC 810G rating which involves drop tests from a height of 1.8 meters is also retained on this phone.
The Cat S61 is also waterproof to a depth of up to 3 meters for up to one hour, allowing it to be used as an underwater camera, pushing the boundaries of mobile technology, and how and where it’s used. As, you would expect it is also dustproof, so you can use it in this type of environment.
The stylish strengthened aluminium reinforced die-cast frame helps with the strength and ensuring the S61 does not look at all bad.
Remember this is a phone, so calls, text messages are core to what the S61 can offer.
Powered by a powerful octa-core processor and coupled with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal memory this comprehensive mobile device is practical in domestic and professional environments.
The operating system is Google’s Android platform and the S61 runs version 8.0 (Oreo) out of the box. With the potential to upgrade to ‘P’ in the future.
You will see excellent usage and screen on times, even when you consider all the great features of this phone and the fact that it does have a 5.2-inch touchscreen display that is toughened with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 and has wet finger and glove support.
Being an Android smartphone you, of course, have access to Google's full suite of applications and Google Play for downloading more. Enjoy Gmail, Drive, Maps, Calendar, Translate and more including Google Play Games, Books, Music & Movies.
Whether you are sharing images captured on the 16-megapixel rear camera, documents created and stored on the internal memory or checking in on what is happening around the world, 4G and Wi-Fi connectivity mean that in most instances you are you can remain connected to the world around you.
A unique smartphone with some very powerful use case scenarios the S61 from CAT can be obtained from CAT approved retailer Clove Technology.
USING THE THERMAL IMAGE CAMERA
The Cat S60 and Cat S61 smartphones detect invisible heat energy up to 100 ft away and capture and measure any changes in temperature as a thermal image or video. Both smartphones use the visible camera and the thermal imaging camera together while FLIR’s patented MSX technology overlays the images on top of each other to create a crisper and more recognizable image with greater detail.
Thermal imaging can be used for real-time problem solving, from finding a leak, a gap in insulation, an electrical fault to locating livestock in the dark and everything in between. Thermal imaging cameras, however, cannot pick up heat signatures on some objects like reflective materials and water and whilst they can see through obscurants like smoke they cannot see through walls, rather detect changes in temperature caused by objects behind the wall.
GETTING THE MOST OUT OF THERMAL IMAGING
The MyFLIR app on both the Cat S60 and Cat S61 allows you to shoot stills, video and time-lapse videos in a file format that can be immediately shared via email from the device. Apply movable spot meters and highlight an area within the image to see temperature differences to both live images and retrospectively to the thermal images saved in your gallery. You can also select custom temperature scales to highlight objects within a specific range.
The Cat S61 also has a new Tips and Tricks section within the app and a Community Forum to help get the most out of its thermal imaging capabilities. Both the Cat S60 and Cat S61 have 9 different colour palettes to choose from when capturing thermal images. For example, try ‘Hottest’ to quickly identify an overheating fuse in a circuit or ‘Coldest’ to view levels of fluid inside tanks.
The integrated thermal camera on the Cat S61 and S61 smartphones ensure thermal imaging technology is always on you, always charged and protected within a rugged device, pushing the boundaries of mobile technology, how and where it’s used.
