DJI Phantom 4 Overview

DJI Phantom 4 MainDJI have rapidly set trhemselves up as the go-to consumer brand for high-quality, "works-out-the-box" consumer drones.

Each year the Phantom brand has been seen as the standard to beat in the UAV industry and 2016's Phantom 4 raises the bar once again with innovative features that make it easier to pilot than ever before.

Forward facing sensors assist in object detection and avoidance to enable autonomous flight and simple piloting from a smartphone or tablet with the new TapFly feature.

The skeleton of the Phantom 4 is manufactured from magnesium to be as stong and light as possible, with durable plastics used for the external casing.

A complete redesign of the Phantom shifts the centre of gravity closer to the product's true centre, improving balance and assisting the constant adjustments that keep every Phantom as level as possible even in strong winds.

The intelligent flight battery has been redesigned and power consumption addressed to increase total flight time to 28 minutes - a 25% improvement on the Phantom 3 series.

Flight Modes

The Phantom 4 now has a range of flight modes that are suited to indivdual circumstances.

For instance the Sport mode adds extra speed and agility for top speeds of up to 45 mph, whilst the Atti mode maintains exact altitude and level with satellite positioning switched off (to avoid lateral movement over several minutes) - perfect for holding still and filming for a set period of time.

DJI Phantom 4 ActiveTrackTapFly provides anyone with the ability to get started instantly. A simple double tap will send the Phantom 4 into the air with intelligent positioning and an Obstacle Sensing System available to avoid objects in front of the drone - you'll still need to be aware of objects directly above or in the rear though.

ActiveTrack is also available. This type of visual tracking allows for you to select a subject in view of the Phantom 4's camera. The Phantom will automatically follow and track the subject, all while automatically avoiding obstacles. Moving POI even allows for circling of the subject.

Moving on from the top quality cameras associated with the Phantom 3 range, each Phantom 4 has a full 4K camera built in to the system. 4K video can be shot at 30 fps and 1080p full HD video up to 120 fps allowing for super-sharp slow motion.

The lens has a 94° field of view and significantly reduces distortion and chromatic abberation compared to the previous cameras.

DJI's gimbals are some of the indusry's best stabilising products. The Phantom 4 camera is housed in a specially designed u-frame with movements controlled by a dedicated Gimbal Control Unit.

This GCU remains in constant communication with internal sensory data from the rest of the Phantom's systems. The result is an ultra-smooth recording even in fairly heavy wind, with gimbal movements accurate to ±0.03°.

For the professional editor or even just knowledgable hobbyists, DJI provide 10 colour profiles as well as Adobe DNG RAW support and lens profiles built straight into to Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.

DJI Phantom 4The DJI GO app is available for iOS and leading Android smartphones and tablets from iTunes and Google Play.

With DJI GO you can experience a direct live HD view on your screen. You see exactly what the Phantom camera sees, allowing you to frame shots, avoid obstacles and change flight direction.

You can also manage the camera control independent of flight directly from DJI GO. The app gives you manual options for aperture, ISO, shutter speed, resolution and more.

The interface of DJI GO also provides you with all the information you need about your Phantom to ensure a safe flight. This includes velocity and altitude data, GPS lock strength and flight battery level. You can quickly change flight modes to adapt to changing conditions and use the live view to react to, or interact with, subjects on the ground.

Logs of all your flights are recorded so you can review them by date and location, and checking the distance travelled, altitude and photos.

DJI GO also has built in support for sharing directly to SkyPixel, the leading community of aerial photographers used by companies, professional , hobbyists and amateurs alike.

Finally if you're new to piloting drones or want to brush up on your skills, DJI GO offers a whole range of video tutorials that cover the basics of flight and maintenance so you can make the most of your new Phantom.

DJI Phantom 4 SensorsCalling the Phantom 4 DJI's most intelligent drone to date is due to the huge amount of sensory input that it collects and processes every second.

First of all the new forward-facing Obstacle Sensing System gives the Phantom 4 a pair of eyes which can detect approaching obstacles in 3 dimensions. In some flight modes the Phantom 4 will stop when it sense an obstacle, in others it will avoid the obstacle as it tracks a subject or change altitude to avoid a collision.

Next on the list a Vision Positioning module that faces directly downwards. This consists of dual cameras and dual ultrasonic sensors to scan the ground. As long as you're flying over the smoothest, most uniformly coloured surface produced by man, the Phantom 4 can use Vision Positioning to provide accurate and safe indoor flights when GPS is unavailable.

TapFly mode is an intuitive method of controlling the Phantom that combines with your iOS or Android smartphone/tablet. Using the Live View feature inside the DJI GO app, you can simply tap on the screen of your tablet to have the Phantom autonomously direct itself to that position, removing the need for fine piloting with the control sticks.

ActiveTrack has been developed to make following a subject on the ground easier than ever. With a combination of sensors and object recognition, you need only highlight a subject on screen to have the Phantom follow. Smoothly circling a stationary (or even moving) subject is a highly advanced skill when using control sticks - ActiveTrack turns the process into a simple flick of the thumb.

With every autonomous flight mode, the Phantom 4 will always be engaged in obstacle avoidance.

DJI Phantom 4Extra features

Utilising a combination of GPS and GLONASS networks, the Phantom 4 can lock on to up to 24 satellites for exact positioning. This lets the Phantom know exactly where it is and where it started from, enabling automatic return to home features and avoidance of internatioanlly recognised flight restricted zones.

Flight logs record the data from every mission. This includes routes, duration, distance, location, and velocity. You can even review your exact control stick movements. Data for internal mechanisms is also collated in the flight recorder - perfect for sharing with DJI support ahould you have any queries.

Every Phantom 4 is fitted with dual compasses and dual Inertial Measurement Units. This built in redundancy allows the Phantom to compare the data it receives from both units and disregard any spurious information should either fail or momentarily provide innacurate data.

Learning to pilot a drone can be a challenging endeavour. The Phantom 4 includes a beginner mode that limits the distance the drone can travel away from the user (100ft / 30m) and prevents camera tilt controls to avoid any confusion.

Every input on the remote controller can be customised to match your flying style. This includes the sensitivity of the control sticks and the buttons used for activating individual features.

What is ActiveTrack?

ActiveTrack allows an aircraft to track a moving subject without a separate GPS tracker. Simply tap on the mobile device screen inside the DJI GO app to select the subject to be tracked. The aircraft will lock on the subject and start tracking it automatically from a safe distance.

What is TapFly?

TapFly means you can fly in any direction with a tap of the finger, without a remote controller. With Obstacle Avoidance turned on, the aircraft will automatically avoid obstacles, slow down or hover when required, provided that the scene is bright enough ( < 300 lux) or too bright ( > 10,000 lux).

What is the Phantom 4 Obstacle Sensing System?

The Phantom 4 is equipped with an Obstacle Sensing System that constantly scans for obstacles in front of it, allowing it to avoid collisions by going around, over or hovering.

Why does the Phantom 4 have a composite core?

The advanced composite core embedded into the aircraft greatly increases rigidity, minimizing unwanted vibrations. This ensures the precision and performance of the inertial measurement unit (IMU). The weight of the aircraft is also reduced through this composite.

What changes were made to the Phantom 4 remote?

The Phantom 4 introduces a Sport mode, accessible through a new trio of modes, P, S and A.
P (Position) mode is the standard mode, giving access to normal flight as well as Intelligent Flight Modes, ActiveTrack and TapFly.
S (Sport) Mode unlocks maximum flight speeds of up to 44mph (72kmh)
A (Attitude) Mode remains the same and removes satellite stabilization in flight. It allows the Phantom to move more smoothly and naturally.

The ‘Playback’ button on the top right of the remote controller has been changed into a ‘Pause’ button that lets you put the Phantom into hover during any Intelligent Flight Mode, ActiveTrack or TapFly with a tap.

What improvements have been made to the Phantom 4 Vision Positioning Unit?

The Vision Positioning System now uses four sensors to increase hovering accuracy and reliability, creating a more controlled flying experience. Its sonar system has been improved and now functions from up to 10 meters off the ground. In ideal situations, these combine to give the Phantom 4 Vision Positioning System a vertical hover accuracy of /- 0.1 m and a horizontal hover accuracy of /- 0.3 m.

What is the effective range of the Obstacle Sensing System on Phantom 4?

The effective range of the Obstacle Sensing System is 0.7 to 15 meters. Although the DJI GO app will indicate when there are obstacles present, pilots should always be paying attention to the aircraft during flight.

What makes the Phantom 4 camera better?

The Phantom 4 camera has been improved in terms of image quality. Chromatic aberration has been reduced by 56% and lens distortion had been reduced by 36% compared to Phantom 3 Professional. In addition to lens improvements, camera firmware has been tweaked to enable the camera to capture 120fps video in full 1080p FHD (the camera’s field of view will be reconfigured to 47° when recording in this mode) for smooth slow motion. The camera is also used for ActiveTrack and TapFly modes.

Why add a redundant IMU and compass to the Phantom 4?

A redundant IMU and compass enhances system reliability. The Phantom 4 can constantly compare data received from both IMUs and then navigate itself using the most accurate data. The same is true of the redundant compasses.

What are the highlights of the Phantom 4 remote control and live feed?

The Phantom 4’s remote control and live feed is based on DJI Lightbridge technology, providing effective control range of up to 3.1mi (5km) in unobstructed areas that are free from interference. Its HD live feed gives you an exact view of your flight, perfect for composing shots.

Does the Phantom 4 have Return-to-Home?

Yes. It also has Smart Return Home which engages the Obstacle Sensing System during return to home flight. If the aircraft sees an obstacle on its way back, it will intelligently avoid it as it comes home.

What’s the purpose of the Sport Mode?

Giving a top speed of 44.7mph (72Kph), Sport mode can be used for fun, letting you fly faster than ever, or to get to your shoot location while the light is perfect.

What’s the horizontal speed of Phantom 4 in Atti Mode?

The horizontal speed of the Phantom 4 in Atti mode is 35.8mph (57.6kph).

What is the difference between Sport Mode and Atti Mode?

Phantom 4 can fly up to 44.7mph in Sport Mode while in ATTI Mode it can fly up to 35.8mph. Phantom 4 will use GPS/Glonass and its Vision Positioning System to achieve precision while hovering. In ATTI Mode, GPS and Vision Positioning System will not function to aid the aircraft in terms of hovering or navigation.

In ActiveTrack, how do you untrack the subject? What happens to the aircraft after you stop tracking?

Tap the Stop button on the left of the screen or pull the pitch stick backward for 3 seconds to exit ActiveTrack. After exiting, the aircraft will hover in place. At this point you may choose to start a new mission or bring the aircraft back to the Home Point.

How small an object can the Obstacle Sensing System see?

The minimum pixel size that the Obstacle Sensing system can see is 500 pixels.

What is ActiveTrack’s minimum altitude?

ActiveTrack will work down to 6ft (2m) above the ground when the aircraft is switched to P mode.
