What is Augmented Reality? Otherwise known as AR (rather than VR for Virtual Reality), these types of applications will typically use a screen technology to overlay interactive images, animations and data on top of the representation of the world in front of you.
For instance, in a game or entertainment scenario, objects or characters you interact with will appear on screen, using the real life objects your camera sees to interact with. Standing in a park? Perhaps alien warriors will come out from behind the trees.
Other applications have much more real-world utility to them. By accurately measuring distances, you can measure up the space available in the corner of a room to see if a piece of furniture fits. With new apps - such as home store Lowe's - you can even manipulate the furniture itself on-screen to see if it will sit correctly.
With Tango, you can discover more about the world around you. Hold up your phone and see virtual objects and information instantly overlaid.
The first uses are for entertainment (games) and measurement (for home improvement and general tools).
Later in 2017, Google will be teaming up with stores, museums and major municipal bodies to provide unique geo-location based information accessible only by Tango-enabled phones.
Read more on the official Google Tango web page. Find Google Tango-enabled applications on the Play Store.
In order for Google Tango to work on the Phab 2 Pro, cutting-edge cameras and sensors need to be working at peak performance.
The main module used for taking still images and becoming your 'video feed' is a high-end 16-megapixel unit. This is flanked by 3 more systems: RGB, depth and fisheye for wide panoramics.
With this combination, Google Tango can effortlessly calculate distances from the phone to real world objects, or the space between items in front of you.
Switch to the front and a standard 8 MP selfie camera is also available.
Triple microphones and Dolby Audio Capture 5.1 & Dolby Atmos technologies lead the way for recording. 360-degree noise-cancelling allows for maximum clarity wherever you are - concert, sports event or school play.
Inside the Phab 2 Pro is a huge 4,050 mAh battery. Of course, this does have to power the very large 6.4" screen so more charge is required! Overall the battery life of the Phab 2 Pro should be consistent with other leading smartphones.
