I have generally shied away from obvious flagship phones and bought phones that are a bit more left field. Above virtually everything else I value battery life, the only thing worse than not having phone is having one that doesn't work. Good battery life seems to be a product of a big battery, a not too powerful processor and as plain a version of Android as possible. The Nokia 8.1 ticks all these boxes as did my two previous phones, a BB Keyone and a Motorola X-play. Much as I liked the physical keyboard on the BB, it is much better for typing when you are a passenger in a moving vehicle, like everyone else I consume more media and documents on my phone so wanted a bigger screen.

I have the copper and steel version which I keep in a clear case and it looks handsome and a bit different to all the grey and black phones about. The fingerprint reader being on the back is something I had to get used to, but it is reliable and quick. The screen is clear and sharp. The NFC aerial works well and for me is well placed somewhere near the top of the phone meaning the metal plate for my in car mag mount doesn't interfere with it. The camera generally performs well, it is at its weakest in poor light and sometimes needs a bit of help by entering the Pro mode if you know what you are doing. Battery life is excellent, the efficient processor no doubt helping.

I regularly use Twitter, WhatsApp various news and weather apps, a banking app, Kindle app, Fitbit, Google pay, Calander, Gmail on four accounts, Google maps and a variety of other apps, although no games, and the phone handles them all smoothly and rarely uses over 50% of the battery power in a day in the couple of months I have had it. Lest we forget the point of a phone is to be able to make and receive calls I would say this Nokia works as well as any phone I have had in along time.

The biggest negatives I can find are the flash/torch is not as bright as other phones I have had and the in-built selection of ringtones aren't great so I used a ringtone maker app to put the intro of Jean Michel Jarre's "Suns Have Gone" on as my ringtone, which I can hear loud and clear.

If like me you'd rather not spend £500-£1000 on a phone but want a good phone and something a bit different the Nokia 8.1 might be just what you are looking for.
