Doro has long been a company with a particular focus. That is to make contemporary technology accessible to those who have traditionally found it difficult to access or learn how to use such products.

The 8040 is more advanced than their usual products in that it is a fully featured smartphone, comparable to those produced by popular manufacturers such as Samsung, Sony and Apple.

Doro though has made their 8040 model different to the standard consumer smartphone powered by Android.

First of all, they have developed a customised interface that has been designed to be an introduction to smartphones, as well as helping you understand how to navigate the phone and find key programs and features.

Secondly, the "My Doro Manager" application has been developed. This allows family members, or other trusted people, to able to remotely access your phone. This can help in adding contacts, alarms, reminders or adding new programs.

Doro has kept the design of the 8040 as simple as possible, whilst taking into consideration those that will be holding it.

The external materials have a soft-touch finish which aids grip, plus the bezels and sides of the phone are relatively thick in comparison to more consumer-oriented smartphones. Both of these choices give the phone some extra size and weight that make it easier to locate and hold, without being cumbersome.

The bottom section of the phone houses 3 large physical buttons to aid with navigation. The Home button in the centre brings you back to the phone's 'home' screen, no matter where you may have navigated to. The 'Back' button on the right returns to the previous screen you were viewing and the 'multitasking' button on the left will show a list of all running programs for you to navigate to or close.

A dedicated camera key is also found in the bottom half of the right-hand edge. This can be used to quickly launch the camera application and acts as a 'two-stage' shutter key in the same way as stand-alone portable cameras.

The back of the phone has an Assistance button, which can be set to call pre-programmed numbers in the case of an emergency.

The underlying operating system of the Doro 8040 is the popular and widely used Android by Google. The 8040 has the 7.0 version installed, otherwise known as 'Nougat'.

The usual interface and design of the system have been radically overhauled by Doro, to provide a simple and intuitive system to navigate.

An initial set up procedure provides a detailed, yet easy to understand, demonstration of how to use various features and is tailored towards complete smartphone novices, so anyone should be able to pick up the Doro with confidence.

Commonly used features such as calling and text messaging are placed front and centre of the main interface after it has been set up. On-screen controls and interactive keys have been made large and bright, plus text is resizable.

Individual contacts you may call or message frequently can be placed onto your home screen for quick access, rather than looking through a list to locate them.

If you already have experience with the Android system or are comfortable with looking at more detailed settings, you can access all of the underlying Android menus and features by pressing the 'Advanced' option from within the main settings menu of the Doro interface.

The Doro 8040 may have been designed and aimed towards novice users.  But, it does include a number of modern hardware features which will make it a product that will remain relevant for a number of years to come.

The 8040 has support for both 3G and 4G mobile data, so if you have an appropriate plan with a mobile network provider, you can have high-speed access to the Internet away from your home Wi-Fi connection.

An 8-megapixel camera is included to take good quality pictures of yourself, friends and surroundings, with a dedicated camera shutter button that makes the phone as simple to use as a dedicated point-and-shoot digital camera. You can also add an external memory card to store more images.

An FM radio is also included so you can tune in to FM radio stations; you will need to use a pair of connected earphones (included with the phone) to listen to FM radio, as these will act as the antenna to receive a signal.

Volume has seven discrete levels, with a maximum receiving amplification of 35 dB. The ringer has been tested to provide a maximum volume of 83 dB(A) at 1 metre so should be audible for those who are hard of hearing. Like most Doro devices, the 8040 is also Hearing Aid Compatible, certified to T3/M3 products.
