Infinity Display

The Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus's screen measures a huge 5.8 inches. If you think that might be too big, just wait until you physically see the phone.

With their 3D glass and Edge technology, Samsung has become incredibly adept at fitting a big screen in a body that belies its size. Research and Development have gone into further miniaturising common internal components, so the screen can be stretched right to the edge.

This new screen has a unique 18.5: 9 screen ratio, making it taller than before. Plus with practically zero edge bezel and only minimal edges to the top and bottom, almost the entire front surface of the phone is the screen.

That screen ratio will allow for traditional 16:9 widescreen content from YouTube, Netflix and other services to play without issue. It also means many movies and other features shot in more cinematic widescreen will fit better, with less black borders.

Samsung's much-praised Super AMOLED+ technology delivers incredible contrast ratios and rich colours, as well as improving battery life and allowing for smart notifications through 'always-on' technology.

The QHD+ resolution of 1440 x 2960 is the first of its kind. This is also the first smartphone to be given an HDR certification from the UHD alliance. With this, streaming services such as Amazon & Netflix will be able to provide tailored 4K content that displays natively.

Integrated into the bottom section of the phone is an invisible Virtual Home Button. A pressure sensitive area of the screen, localised vibrations provide feedback so you can have extra actions beyond simply returning to the home screen.

Bixby Assistant

There are now many virtual assistants in the mobile world. Some are part of a phone manufacturer's ecosystem, others, such as Amazon Echo and Google Assistant look to be platforms on which to either sell you products or collect data to sell.

Bixby is different. Rather than simply answering questions or providing you with product lists, Bixby is designed to be a true assistant.

Bixby will help you use your phone, as well as making helpful, context-sensitive suggestions that depend on what you may be doing with your Galaxy S8 Plus at the time.

Always available but never intrusive, you can launch Bixby at any time with the dedicated button on the side of the phone.

Many core applications will be Bixby compatible at launch such as messaging, phone, contacts, email, maps and camera. With Bixby active, you can seamlessly work between these apps without having to use the phone interface.

For instance, should you be setting up a route in Maps, Bixby will let you immediately share this with contacts through a voice command, rather than needing to manually share and select individuals.

The new assistant will also work as a situationally aware Augmented Reality agent. With the camera open and Bixby active, you can gain extra information about landmarks or local points of interest. Perhaps the area's history will show on screen or opening times and menus will be offered.

You could even translate a foreign road sign into your native language then ask for maps to route you there, all by pointing the camera and asking!

Locations can be saved and alerts created for specific events. For instance, if you find a long article on your lunch break that you would like to read later, you can activate Bixby and ask it to remind you about it an hour after you get home.

3rd party integration is also available and expanding. One example is Google Play Music; you can set reminders for new tracks or albums from artists.

Bixby also has its own home page as a dedicated system app. This provides an overview of all the events, locations, alerts and reminders you have set, all presented in a simple card interface and intelligently grouped to make searching easier.

As smartphones and tablets have become more powerful, many manufacturers have sought to bridge the gap between mobile and desktop computing.

DeX (Desktop eXperience) is Samsung's foray into this world. With the Samsung DeX dock (sold separately), you can drop the Galaxy S8 or S8 Plus in and immediately be presented with a desktop environment on any monitor.

Wired or wireless keyboards and mice can be connected to the DeX dock. Commonly used keyboard shortcuts (such as copy and paste) have been integrated into DeX to mimic a traditional desktop space as much as possible.

Within the DeX environment, you have access to all of the core apps on the Galaxy S8 Plus, which have been optimised and can be launched in resizable windows to emulate a true workstation.

Integration between apps is important, so common desktop features such as dragging and dropping files through the system are available. This even extends to apps; you can simply drop a file into an email to add it as an attachment.

Samsung has worked closely with Microsoft and Adobe to ensure there is compatibility for commonly used file formats. This allows you to properly edit Word, Excel and Powerpoint files, as well as PDFs.

DeX also supports facial recognition. With the phone docked, simply look at it to unlock the system and have the DeX display show up on the monitor.

Samsung Knox has been fully integrated with the DeX environment so the systems can be seamlessly integrated within current business set-ups that utilise Samsung Galaxy products with Knox.

Fingerprint sensors have become increasingly common, with every major smartphone release.

Previously located on the physical home button, Samsung's move to an integrated touch button on the screen has forced the fingerprint sensor to move.  It can now be located on the back of the phone next to the camera lens.

If you want to try other unlock and security methods, then Samsung definitely has you covered.

Last year's Iris scanner returns for a front-facing unlock option. If you happen to be too far from the screen, then there is also an improved face-unlock engine. Much improved upon Android's own face-recognition, Samsung's system has a much higher positive detection rate.

There is a tier of security in place, so face-unlock will only work for home screen access. Online payments and any other features that require user authentication will still require fingerprint, iris or the user's back up PIN/password.

Samsung has made a bold move with the Galaxy S8 Plus by keeping the same camera module and lens installed as the last generation. This includes Optical Image Stabilisation and the f/1.7 aperture, 1/2.5" sensor size and 1.4µm pixels as before.

Now, this is no bad thing; the S7 range camera was (and still is!) widely considered to be one of the best available.

So what's changed? Well rather than spend time on the hardware, Samsung has put all of their imaging resources this year into improving the software available to the S8 Plus.

As any photography aficionado will tell you, image processing is just as important as the lens and sensor itself.

The camera now has the ability to take multiple shots at the same time, interlacing them to create the sharpest result. This is similar but distinct to HDR+ technology.

The front facing camera has received an improvement. This is now up to 8 megapixels with the same f/1.7 aperture as the rear and includes face-tracking autofocus with HDR.
