Samsung Gear S Overview
With the Gear S, Samsung is redefining what it means to be a smartwatch. Until now, wearables have been tied to a cleverer, more powerful primary device such as your daily smartphone or tablet.
No longer with the Gear S* - this is the first truly smart watch from a major manufacturer, with a SIM card slot as well as on-board GPS and WiFi connectivity for the ultimate wearable.
The Gear S uses Samung's own Tizen operating system and is designed to work completely independently from your Samsung Galaxy smartphone*. Through the Gear manager on your Samsung Galaxy you can still share information as you need it, although you can now, for the first time, go exploring without taking both devices with you.
With Samsung S Health and a partnershp with Nike, the Gear S is an excellent workout companion with its heart rate monitor, alongside other sensors including accelerometer, gyroscope and digital compass. All the stored data can be replayed on the 2 inch screen, uploaded to the cloud for viewing from the online portal or shared with another compatible device.
Curved 2.0" screen
The curved screen on the Gear S makes use of Samsung's Super AMOLED technology and advancements in bendable displays. This allows the design of the watch to be contoured to your wrist, without reducing the size of the screen by staying flat. The 'conversation view' and condensed font also simplify catching up on your notifications with a quick glance.
Notifications from all your preferred social networks can be received and replied to with ease; the on screen keyboard allows for quick and accurate typing.
Make calls and message with S Voice
S Voice speech recognition can also control tasks and reply to messages for you to complete tasks immediately. The SIM card slot means you can have messages and calls come directly to your wrist, rather than your phone. The built in microphones on Gear S mean you can initiate and complete a call without ever touching the screen.
Dedicated SIM slot
The Gear S has the ability to completely replace your Samsung Galaxy smartphone if you happen to be a low power user and just need notifications, messages and calls when out and about. If you still want to keep a separate mobile device, then you can continue to use the Gear S as a secondary Bluetooth unit, just like a traditional smartwatch, and swap your SIM card in should you want to leave the phone at home.
Alternatively, mobile carriers are working on new contracts (country, region & plan dependent), that will allow you to share a phone number's usage over more than one SIM - speak to your carrier today to find out more.
Even without a SIM card installed in the Gear S, the WiFi & GPS capabilities make it far more than a basic tracker accessory.
