Sony Xperia Ear Overview

Ready for 2017, the Sony Xperia Ear puts a modern intelligent Assistant right by your side.

Sony is ready to work alongside the likes of Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple's Siri with their own Sony Assistant and Xperia Voice Agent.

The Sony Assistant is in its first generation and will continue to be updated and supported by Sony throughout 2017 and into the future. Full integration with Xperia handsets is available now and other Sony home equipment will follow, including audio visual and other entertainment units. Ear is also compatible with other modern Android devices.

Sony says hello when you get up

The Xperia Ear automatically knows when you have picked it up and put it on. Internal sensors register as Ear is fitted. As Ear wakes up, you can be greeted personally with a selection of news, weather, unread messages and daily events on your schedule. This can be tailored to suit your tastes.

Throughout the day, Ear will read incoming messages from SMS, email and selected popular messaging applications such as WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. You can also choose which of these services are switched on.

As calls come in you can quickly tap the Ear to answer them, with another tap to end the call. A combination of noise cancelling microphones and a directional mic aimed to your jaw allow for you to hold conversations even in busy surroundings.

Talk to the Assistant

You can also ask Sony's Assistant questions and provide commands. Simple questions are understood when using trigger words such as "Where, When, Who, How and Why" at the start of your sentence. In this first generation, the Sony Assistant will return answers from Wikipedia.

A number of commands can also be issued. You can ask Ear to tell you the time, date or upcoming weather (in any location), as well as your next scheduled events or messages.

Asking for directions from your current location or a specific start point will also trigger Google Maps to load on your phone with the information preloaded. Confirm the route and Google's turn-by-turn directions will be played back through Ear.

Other commands include making calls, sending or checking on messages, setting alarms and scheduling events. A full list of Sony Assitant phrases can be found at the s-assistant website.

If Ear provides you with a question, such as asking if you want to call somebody back, you can answer with a simple nod or shake of the head.

As the Sony Assistant grows and develops, the commands and integration with 3rd party apps will also be improved.

Xperia Ear Design

Sony has designed the Xperia to be lightweight and fit as many people as possible.

Inside the box, you'll find 3 sets of ear buds, as well as 3 sets of 'wings' that let the unit rest on your ear comfortably. At just 15.2 x 29.3 x 24.3 mm, the core unit is small and discreet, so it is isn't immediately obvious Ear is being worn.

Also found in the box is a slimline carrying case which doubles as the charger. Fully charged, the case holds enough juice to fully top up the Ear 5 times and can be powered by a standard micro USB connection. The Ear unit itself charges inductively, as soon as you put it in the case and close the lid.

Sound comes from the Ear in mono. You can listen to music through the unit, although it is best designed for conversations or simple speech such as listening to messages, audiobooks or podcasts. Directional and noise-cancelling microphones also help with maintaining a clear conversation in busy environments.

The main face of the Xperia Ear is a clickable button. Whenever you want to interact with Ear, simply press the button and wait for the beep to start talking. This also answers/ends calls and stops playback of messages to move on to the next article.
