Sphero rolling robots are toys for the 21st century.
Suitable for kids (and adults) of all ages, Sphero bots are quick to pick up and play with. Initially you can make control them around the home or garden, learning to manage the controls and engaging with Augmented Reality games and apps.
There's greater depth available too though! Beyond simply making them roll about, you can also delve into the world of both visual and text-based programming. Sphero internal mechanics can be controlled directly with user programs so the play is quite literally limitless!
The Sphero 2.0 is a highly durable robotic ball. Capable of speeds of up to 4.5 mph, it's a fast and fun gadget that anyone can quickly pick up and learn to control.
The ball is also manufactured from a highly resilient polycarbonate shell. It's meant to be played with! The design can take trips around a dirty garden, sneak attacks from pets and quick dunks underwater without harm.
Inside the Sphero 2.0 are an accelerometer and gyroscope. These allow the ball to report how fast it's going, whether it's accelrating or braking and figure out which way is up!
The unit is controlled via Bluetooth. All you need to do is download the Sphero control app for iPhone or Android and connect. A 30 metre outdoor range lets you create decent sized tracks and obstacle courses.
Inside the Sphero are coloured LEDs, which let the ball glow and shine with millions of possible colours. You can personalise your Sphero with a unique glow of your own.
Sphero 2.0 features an internal Li-Po battery which delivers an hour of play from a full charge. A charging station is also included. The Sphero ball charges via induction, so theres no ports or messy cables to worry about - just drop it in and pick it up!
You can further enhance the Sphero 2.0 witrh additional accessories. Nubby & Turbo covers add grip and traction for better use outdoors in mud, water or gravel, while the Chariot is just a bit of fun!
This app talks to the Sphero bot via Bluetooth and allows you complete control over direction and speed.
An on-screen d-pad provides visual controls, or you can tilt the phone or tablet to have the Sphero mirror your movements.
The app features a free-roam mode, which provides you with complete control of Sphero. There is also a learning mode, which restricts the top speed.
As you work through the 20 missions of the learning mode, the top-speed increases, along with trick buttons and colour options for the internal LED. The result is you learn to control Sphero more skillfully.
Alongside standard controls, you can also enjoy Augmented Reality (AR) apps and minigames. Don't have enough equipment to set up a real obstacle course? Use the screen on your smartphone to guide Sphero through virtual mazes and race tracks. You can even play multiplayer, challenging friends to beat your times and scores.
Sphero is an excellent first step towards learning visual programming languages.
The SPRK Lightning Lab is available as both a smart app and central online hub. With it you can learn how to control Sphero bots.
Starting off with simple straight lines, you can then designing complex patterns that involve multiple changes of direction and speed. Eventually introduce conditional arguments and Sphero becomes a smart droid capable of being left to its own devices.
Using the basics you can program both visually and textually. 3 levels exist: 1. Simply drawing and connecting lines on screen which the Sphero will recreate. 2. Moderate control with code blocks - dragging and dropping them to create routines. 3. pros can get complete control with actual coding; developing procedural conditions and methods then deploying them to your Sphero units.
The SPRK educational system is a free online resource and is designed to walk you through the learning capabilities. Structured lessons can turn a complete novice into a programming whizz by the end of term.
A community also exists around the world online. Sphero can be connected to drones, Xbox game console controllers and other open equipments. Once you have finished the SPRK tutorials, those looking for more can eplore the online world and start their own projects.

Included accessories are also different. Sphero 2.0 is provided with ramps. SPRK Edition includes a Genius Kit with pencil, notepad and protractor.
SPRK Plus is the newest version of Sphero’s educational rolling robots. It has the same internal features as the original Sphero 2.0 and previous SPRK Edition.

SPRK Plus uses new Bluetooth Smart technology. This allows for much faster connections to compatible devices.
A new scratch-resistant coating has also been used with the SPRK Plus' polycarbonate shell. This means the little bot will stay looking new for much longer!
At the time of writing: All of them!
