The next BlackBerry smartphone has been teased in a short promotional video as part of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) that took place in January 2017 in Las Vegas.

Uploaded to Twitter by Steve Cistulli, the President & GM of TCL Communication in North America, it has got many Android and BlackBerry fans talking.

TCL are the firm that BlackBerry has begun working with to build their smartphones as part of their refocused strategy.

BlackBerry used to manufacture devices themselves, but TCL, better known for manufacturing brands like Alcatel, have now taken over the role of producing the hardware and BlackBerry will produce the software, with new devices still carrying the BlackBerry brand.

When the BlackBerry Passport was launched running BlackBerry OS, there was call for an Android equivalent. Whilst not a direct alternative, this new device could answer the needs and wants of a certain user group who still like a physical keyboard, but want the Android platform.

The video does not give away a lot with more information due to come out at Mobile World Congress (MWC) next month.

Some popular technology sites have already got the chance to get very brief hands on. From this there are a few key features that have been determined as follows (all information subject to change):

  • A combination of touchscreen and physical keyboard
  • Physical keyboard with optical trackpad
  • 3.5mm headphone jack
  • USB Type-C connectivity
  • Fingerprint reader built into space bar
  • Android 7.0 Nougat installed
  • DTEK security suite
  • Metal body
  • Programmable key

The name of the device has not yet been confirmed either. The code name for the handset is 'Mercury' and this is what seems to be sticking at the moment, but DTEK70 and also BlackBerry Press are two other names that have been suggested.

The DTEK name fits with BlackBerry under their new strategy, but so far has been used only on their all touch devices, where the Priv by BlackBerry which is a mix of keyboard and touchscreen like the BlackBerry Mercury does not incorporate the DTEK branding other than in the software. As a result the BlackBerry Press could be a suitable name. Time will tell.

We will bring you more information as soon as it becomes available and we will be selling this BlackBerry device as soon as it is launched in the UK. Add your name and email address to the 'NOTIFY ME WHEN THIS BECOMES AVAILABLE' box you will see just below the images above and we will let you know when we have more information.

In the meantime you may like to take a look at some of the hands on videos that have been published already.
