You wouldn’t put money in a bank that didn’t lock its safe. Or leave the doors of your home unlocked at night, would you?

Having a smartphone that doesn’t take your privacy seriously is the equivalent.

DTEK50 by BlackBerry ensures that how you share the private details of your life—your location, your pictures, your texts—is your decision.

Not All Smartphones Are Equally Secure

When it comes to security, BlackBerry leads all other Android smartphones. Security isn’t something they tack on, it’s fully integrated into their device hardware and OS.

BlackBerry set the bar in incident response and patch management, and bring their world-renowned security experts and testing to their new line of BlackBerry secure smartphones powered by Android. DTEK50 will keep you safe and secure.

Take Back Control of Your Privacy

Security can seem complicated, but we want to make it simple for you. DTEK will automatically monitor your OS and apps and let you know when your privacy could be at risk and how you can take action to improve it. DTEK also tracks your applications and notifies you when someone is: taking pictures or videos without your knowledge, turning your microphone on, sending a text message, or accessing your contacts or location.

Ongoing Security

Many popular smartphones put the user’s private information at risk of being hacked due to slow security updates.

BlackBerry has a record of being the quickest to deliver security patches. Other mobile device manufacturers can take weeks, months or even years to deliver security patches, leaving you and possibly your organisation vulnerable and at risk. If you have a smartphone, when was the last time your device was updated?

DTEK50 is packed with lots of other security features like Encryption that protects your pictures or bank info from being stolen if you were to lose your phone. Password Keeper allows you to store secret passwords and notes. Take control and be confident knowing your personal data is being kept private.

Fully Android

DTEK50 comes with Android 6.0 Marshmallow, giving you full access to Google Play, home screen widgets, Google Now, and the ability to easily connect to the things you use every day like your TV, car and connected systems in your house.

With an existing Google account, you can be up and running in moments. Have your data sync to the phone over WiFi or 4G or use NFC pairing to complete a simple data transfer from an existing phone (subject to compatibility).

BlackBerry Intelligent Keyboard

DTEK50 features a smart keyboard designed to learn from you and increase your typing accuracy and speed. The BlackBerry Intelligent Keyboard learns and provides word suggestions as you type, that include up to 3 languages of your choice, letting you flick them into place for faster conversations.

Convenience Key

BlackBerry understands that every second counts and convenience is key. That’s why DTEK50 comes with a customizable BlackBerry Convenience Key. With the press of a button, the Convenience Key provides quick access to your most used applications, tasks and more. The Convenience Key is also usable as mute key when on an active call.

Dazzling Photo Quality

Capture the perfect selfie with an 8MP front facing camera with a LED flash, or capture the moment with the dazzling 13MP auto-focus rear camera.

The rear camera is equipped with a range of professional settings including live colour filters and manual controls. Plus, features like Phase Detection Auto Focus and a dual-tone LED flash are designed to help the camera focus instantly and accurately for blur-free, realistic looking photos, even in low light.

5.2” Scratch Resistant Screen

DTEK50 has a 5.2” full HD (1920 x 1080) display, capable of displaying 16 million colours. The screen is made of scratch-resistant glass and features a specialised Oleophobic coating to protect against fingerprint smudges.

Expandable Memory

DTEK50 offers a micro SD card slot to expand the smartphone’s storage. With support for micro SD cards up to 2 TB, DTEK50 gives you the flexibility to add affordable and hot-swappable memory to download, install, capture and share as your needs evolve.

This ability to expand the memory is in addition to the internal memory which is 16GB.

Life, Simplified

Keep life organised with BlackBerry Hub. This unified inbox is an irreplaceable tool for consolidating all of your messages in one place. Whether it's emailing, calendar, social or phone calls. BlackBerry Calendar is the best out-of-box calendar experience on Android. When it’s time to join a call, DTEK50 presents you with a simple Join Now button that automatically dials you in. When receiving or creating meeting invites, you are presented with adjacent or conflicting appointments.

Whether it is Gmail, Exchange or Outlook email accounts, these can be easily added configured and used on the DTEK50.

A smartphone built with you in mind

The number of choices you have when buying a smartphone is incredible. Many offer great specification and price points, but few really focus and promote how the device works for you. The DTEK50 is a smartphone that has your personal data, your security and productivity in mind. From DTEK security app to regular updates or to BlackBerry Hub that unifies communications, the DTEK50 is a simplified approach to communication and life on the go.

As a long standing, loyal BlackBerry user (having had the "Curve", "Z10" and also "Passport Silver Edition") I came to the difficult decision to consider moving away - with great reluctance, I might add - from the excellent BB10 O/S platform.

A simple case that for my business (where I use Google Apps For Work extensively) I had no choice but to give Android serious consideration (nb. iOS was never on my radar, nor will it ever be!).

I passed on the "Priv" as it was a little expensive and opted (at that time) for the Passport S/E. That turned out to be a super choice.. but didn't solve my "Google" problem - as of course the Passport uses BB10 O/S (which is _superb_ - but no Google Apps for Work Apps).

So along comes the DTEK50. Without doubt THE worst name for a smart phone of all time (of those that I know) - I know the reasons behind the name but still... that's a poor choice!

Fortunately once you get past the clumsy name, it's up-hill all the way! As has been well publicised this is NOT BlackBerry's own hardware. Instead it's a rethought version of a model by Alcatel. Don't let that put you off though. It's true that initially this doesn't "feel" (nor look) like a BB device (save for the symbol on the back) - but personally that hasn't bothered me.

The first thing that grabbed me was just how LIGHT this handset is. We're talking seriously light here - especially having come from the Passport! (which is heavy due to the square screen massive battery inside).

So a refreshing change for me personally to have something so light and easy to hold (this is NOT a "Phablet" [don't get me started...!] - and feels about right to me (Goldilocks herself would be content with the shape and size of this device!)).

The latest (Marshmallow) release of Android is included - but the winning touch for me is the inclusion of the superb BlackBerry "Hub" - and also some other BB-only / originating extras. Ironically (seeing as so much has been made of it in the press) the advertised enhanced security features were NOT a big deal for me - but they come of course as a BIG bonus, irrespective of how security-focussed (or not) you are. I have heard bad stories about Android in this regard - so if you have too, rest assured the DTEK50 IS the most secure Android handset out there.

The included memory of "only" 16gb IS a little disappointing - but as this features the latest Android (where Micro SD card memory can be added and count as "System" memory) I soon rectify this by investing in a hefty (but future-proof) 128gb (!) Micro SD card.

After 10 days or so my ONLY concern with this excellent handset is the battery life. Providing I charge overnight (which of course is easy and timing-wise fine too) I *just about* get through a working day - including evening time up to about midnight.

It DOES, however, crawl over the finish line (of midnight) - so I'm expecting it to perhaps not reach this point if I've had a particularly busy day on the phone. So that is a genuine concern - but no different I'm sure to what people face with handsets from other major manufacturers..

Overall? If, like me, you have stuck with BlackBerry and feel "bad" (guilty almost!) leaving them behind, this Android-powered handset could well be a perfect compromise for you. I'm very impressed with mine so far - and can certainly highly recommend it.

    John Mounsey, August 2016.

I have been a Blackberry user since thier first touch screen! I have been a very happy user of the Z30 for the past 2 years but find there are a few apps I neede that were just not available on that operating system.
I received my DTEK50 as soon as it was available. It has taken a little time to get used to it but overall I am very happy and am not now missing my Z30.
The Blackberry Hub is great, though once you have looked at a single email account it does not automatically go back to hub, which I find a little frustrating!
My main problem with this phone is the poor battery life.
I quite often have to get it on charge by early afternoon and for the first time yesterday, it actually closed down as there was no battery power left.
I now see the reason the extra battery power pack was given as part of the deal but this is so big and heavy I really cannot carry it around with me.
If the battery was as good as the Z30 one I would give this phone 5 stars.

  • Noni 18/11/2016 Recommend to a friend? Yes
As a BlackBerry fan but not a fan of Android, I decided one more time to try an Android phone, but this time on a BlackBerry.

I can't say if the DTEK software protects my privacy more than any other, but one of my main reasons for buying was for the BlackBerry Hub - everything in one place, and it didn't disappoint.

Also (gimmick here), like the Alcatel Idol 4, you can speak to someone with your phone upside down! Call quality is good, I've not suffered any lag despite almost filling the 9GB of internal storage available.

The screen is vivid and clear but not scratch resistant- I don't know how but I ended up with a scratch on my screen. And it's been in the case since I've had it.. The size is just about right for me, anything with a screen larger than 5.2" would have been difficult for me to handle.

The big disappointment is the battery life. It feels like I'm using a BB Curve - I have to charge it at least once a day, on my journey to work, about 70-80 minutes, I can use up 40-70% of my battery. I tend to stream radio, play a bit of Pokemon Go, and do social media en route.

Apart from the above, this is the first Android phone I've liked and enjoyed using aince the original Moto G.

Bought DTek50 from Clove when it came out last year.I agree with other reviewer that Battery life is poor. The size is just right for me ( DTek60 is too large for me).As a former Blackberry OS10 user I like the hub and keyboard. Unfortunately I dropped it onto concrete floor from just above knee height position and broke the screen, it is now useless as I decided not to repair it as the cost is around 135 pound sterling. I found out that the screen is not a Gorilla glass screen.  It had Blackberry hard case when I dropped it. I you have one please use a more substantial case.  If you want a DTek, get the DTek60, it is a much better phone,my wife has one.
