If you are looking for a stylish design and modern features, without spending hundreds on a household brand name, the Honor 6X could be exactly what you're looking for in 2017.
Manufactured with lightweight, metal-frosted material, the Honor 6X certainly looks the part next to similar phones from Apple and Samsung.
When you consider the device's specifications you are likely to be impressed! A fingerprint sensor, modern dual-camera with phase detection autofocus, plus a high-speed octa-core processor.
Screen & Design
The large 5.5" touchscreen display offers a Full HD (1080p) resolution. This delivers a pixels-per-inch ratio of around 403.
The screen is bright with an excellent range of colours and contrast. Added to this, the Huawei EMUI software allows for personalisation of the colour temperature to best suit your eyes, environment and viewing style.
2.5D curved edge glass seamlessly moulds into the phone's casing for an ergonomic and comfortable hold. Honor 6X's bodywork is developed from a lightweight metal-frosted material which creates a premium, tactile touch, without expensive manufacturing costs.
As a subsidiary of Huawei, Honor phones are now using the HiSilicon branded processors.
A powerful alternative to Qualcomm, HiSilicon's Kirin range offer top of the range multi-core mobile processors for excellent speed, multitasking and media performance.
Honor 6X uses the Kirin 655. This is an octa-core processor with a 4 x 2.1 GHz core and 4 x 1.7GHz core. Marrying Huawei's own processor to the EMUI software allows for efficiency within the operating system that is otherwise not possible.
Everything is powered by a 3,340 mAh battery using new high-density technology. This keeps the weight and size of the cell down to allow more power in a smaller space. Average users should expect to get well into the second day of use from a single full charge.
Honor joined in with adding fingerprint sensors to some of their earliest phones. All of their new handsets include them and the 6X is using up to date 3rd generation scanner technology.
This is fast and accurate, delivering a positive read in just 0.3 seconds - fast enough to have the phone unlocked and on the home screen before you've even got it out of your pocket to look at!
Third generation sensors also have another trick up their sleeve - contextual touch responses. When the screen is unlocked, tapping or sliding across the sensor with your finger has different effects.
The sensor can scroll you up and down text on a web page for instance. It can also be used to access the notification shade and remove notifications. Left and right swipes can move through home screens or galleries. Individual, double and triple taps can also be configured by the user to launch applications or other actions.
Continuing the trend appearing on more of the highest-end smartphones, Honor's newest device utilises a dual camera set up on the rear.
The main camera is a 12 megapixel Sony IMX386 module. The secondary sensor is just 2 megapixels, but this isn't used for taking standalone images.
Instead, the second module is designed to augment the first. With it, you can apply inventive depth of field effects to images and utilise an array of specialised after effects.
A synthesised aperture range of f/0.95 to f/16 is also available thanks to the second sensor.
The secondary module assists in autofocussing too. Phase Detection Autofocus (PDAF) is supported by the Honor 6X camera configuration for high speed, natural focusing of still and moving subjects in less than half a second.
Honor 6X's lens cover has a scratch-resistant cover which is also specially coated to reduce fingerprints and smudges.
Several shooting options are included in the EMUI software too. Choose from time-lapse, slow motion, low-light options and dozens of filters and scenes for both selfies and traditional images.
Dual SIM has greatly increased in popularity recently. Not often catered for by big-name brands in the UK, Honor ensure all of their devices have a Dual SIM ready slot.
This lets you have two entirely separate SIM cards and phone numbers - even from different networks.
This is particularly useful for those looking to keep work and personal contacts totally separate, or perhaps travellers and tourists who can run a local SIM when abroad.
Honor 6X's SIM tray is dual purpose. The microSD card slot shares the position with the second nano SIM slot. So if you want to use the Dual SIM function, you do have to forego having a memory card on the phone.
Either SIM can be marked as primary, letting you switch between which is being used for calls, messages and mobile data.
Be aware only one SIM can be active for mobile data at a time; the other will be restricted to 2G voice and text. If you are on a call with one SIM the other will divert to voicemail or return unavailable (depending on your network settings).
Simple Interface - EMUI 4.1
At its core, the Honor 6X is running the Android operating system. This has been customised with the Huawei EMUI system for Huawei & Honor devices.
This is a clean and simple interface that provides a unique look out of the box and focuses on ease of use and accessibility.
Clear icons, large fonts and gesture controls are just some of the ways in which this is achieved.
Once a SIM card is added to the phone, you can create a Huawei account to access a huge array of EMUI 4.1 themes and customisation options.
Themes & icon packs are both available - some free and some paid for - that let you totally change the look and feel of the phone in an instant.
Standard Google apps and service are all available including the Google Play store. Huawei's own curated app stores can also be accessed.
