Honor 9 (SIM Free / UK)

A flagship for 2017, the Honor 9 has a specification sheet to rival some of the finest of the smartphone world. Impressive dual camera technology is matched with a beautifully slick finish and powerful processing.
Pound for pound, this could well be the best power-to-price available in 2017.

Making global gains with their unique brand of millennial-targeted affordable smartphones, Honor is now targeting the high-end of the industry. Last year's Honor 8 & Honor 8 Pro were perhaps some of the best phones around, and arguably both worth considerably more than their RRP.
This year Honor is at it again. The Honor 9 further develops the attractive design, dual-lens camera, and overall specification to a new level.
Design and Craftsmanship
A few things separate the top of the smartphone pile from the mid-range; one of those is industrial design.
Honor has once again upped their game, and the new Honor 9 looks right at home next to premium phones from Apple, Samsung or Sony.
The most eye-catching feature has to be the rear panel. Designed with a 15-layer optical coating, light reflects at every angle creating a mesmerising effect. The curved 3D glass used on the back also allows your hand to mould perfectly into a satisfying grip.
This curve seamlessly blends into the Auroral metal frame and round to the 2.5D curved front glass. A gapless finish between glass and metal avoids any edges or spots for any dust to accumulate.
Initially available with an intense Sapphire Blue finish, the colouring of the Honor 9 is subtly implemented across the whole phone, with slightly different shades used to accent buttons, antenna lines, and bezels.
The cameras also fit fully into the phone's body, leaving a perfectly smooth finish on the rear and no bump. Finally, the fingerprint sensor has now been relocated to the phone's front, on the chin, and topped with a robust ceramic cover.
First introduced with Huawei's P9 series, the dual camera series delivers exceptional image quality. The updated system uses improved sensors at the same resolutions as before: 20MP Monochrome (black & white) and 12MP RGB (full colour).
The new sensor modules have enlarged pixels to better capture light in darker environments and produce more vibrant imagery in general.
The monochrome sensor provides you with the ability to shoot native black and white digital photography, which can capture stark images in an array of environments.
Combined with the RGB lens, the monochrome sensor can be utilised to provide additional detail and contrast. Having a second lens also provides the ability to engage in lossless 2x optical 'hybrid' zoom.
Depth-of-field Bokeh effects can be produced naturally too. An on-screen aperture adjustment simulates f/0.95 - f/1.6. Combine this with portrait mode's beauty algorithm for professional looking headshots.
Additional features include Laser assisted phase-detection focusing (PDAF) for high-speed results and better capture of moving subjects.
Low light imagery is enhanced by making the 20MP monochrome sensor the primary image taker, then letting the RGB colour the resultant shot. This preserves as much detail as possible whilst delivering a softer final image.
A professional shooting mode has a suite of features to better manage your photography. These include control over ISO, shutter speed, exposure, auto-focus and white balance.
2 second live photos can be created alongside traditional video. 4K recording is also supported with H.265 codec technology to take up as little space as possible. EIS video stabilisation also saves power and results in smoother shooting when panning the phone to record moving subjects.
An additional native Go Pro editing function is included too. With a modern Go Pro you can directly view and transfer footage to the phone with Wi-Fi Direct. The built-in editing suite on the Honor 9 has soundtrack addition and rhythm adjustment, so you can make enough changes to raw footage on the phone to have it ready for uploading before you even get home.

If you want to compete at the top level of smartphone technology the raw hardware has to perform. Huawei's 2.4 / 1.8GHz octa-core Kirin 960 processor aligns with other top-tier mobile SoCs, providing excellent power-efficiency that learns and adjusts to the owner's use patterns.
LPDDR4 RAM is supported for the highest possible data throughput. The UK model of the Honor 9 has 4GB of RAM (a 6GB version is manufactured for other sales regions).
The Vulkan image interface has also been improved for faster and more detailed image representation on screen. An 8-core GPU can be accessed to render full 3D worlds in real-time and support the latest mobile games.
Android & EMUI
The EMUI (Emotion UI) has a been a feature of Huawei / Honor phones for many years now. Based on the Android OS, EMUI provides a whole host of additional features and themes so you can create a truly personalised interface on your phone.
Installed out of the box on the Honor 9 is the newest EMUI 5.1, built on top of Android 7.0 Nougat.
Improved Resource Management
EMUI 5.1 introduces a number of features. First up is improved resource management. It's a background thing and not something you'll notice, however, the software is always analysing your usage patterns to ensure resources are allocated efficiently. Combined with Huawei's own Kirin 960 processor, the result is buttery smooth interaction and improved battery life.
Multifunction Home Key
With the fingerprint sensor moved to the phone's chin, it now also doubles as a home button. This can also be used as the full navigation control, removing the on-screen Android navigation buttons and the need for capacitive buttons. You can now tap the sensor for
This can also be used as the full navigation control, removing the on-screen Android navigation buttons and the need for capacitive buttons. You can now tap the sensor for Back, hold for Home or swipe across to access Recent Apps. Note, this can also be turned off if you want the older button bar reinstated on the screen.
If you take a lot of pictures then this may well be useful. The built in EMUI Gallery will now organise your photos automatically by date, location or even content.
This is similar to the Google Photos app but built directly into EMUI, in case you don't want to use the Google service.
Ultra Response touch tracking
This feature has been designed to more quickly process touch input. The result is an interface that responds immediately with next to zero latency for super smooth scrolling and taps.
EMUI has always provided users with a lot of Themes and customisation options, whether you use the installed EMUI store or access one of many third party options.
New themes have of course been developed for EMUI 5.1 some of which have been designed to match the updated hardware colours of the Honor 9 and other Huawei devices.
As expected, the Honor 9 has all of the modern connectivity you can expect from a top-tier smartphone.
This includes high-speed 4G-LTE connectivity and assisted GPS. Included too is an NFC chip, which when combined with the fingerprint sensor or pattern/PIN security, can be used to authorise contactless payments through Android Pay.
With smartphones becoming the way we consume much of our media, getting the sound output right is very important.
Huawei has developed and patented the new Huawei Histen 3D system. This is the result of collaboration with Grammy, to deliver a broader sound field and engage a 3D surround sound experience, enhanced by the included Honor Purity equalizer devedevelopedconjunction with Monster.
A 3,200 mAh Li-Po battery is installed in the Honor 9. Software algorithms within EMUI 5.1 make better use of available power, adapting to your usage patterns and encouraging low power consumption at suitable times.
A 9V2A fast charger is also included with every Honor 9 so you can top up the phone quickly.
