Last year the LG V10 was an unexpected hit worldwide. Separate from LG's flagship 'G' range, the V models feature higher grade, experimental technology not often seen in mainstream phones.
This year the V20 offers up the same 5.7" Quad HD (1440 x 2560) main screen with a slightly improved always-on second display. Big changes though include improvements to the camera systems and digital audio processing.
LG have also changed the design significantly. The V20 looks more like the recent G5 with rounded corners, stainless steel side rails with a metallic paint job and circular rear mounted fingerprint sensor.
The V20 is also the first smartphone to launch with Android 7.0, making it the most up to date device in the Android ecosystem.
The main camera on the V20 has a high-grade 16 megapixel resolution. This is accompanied by a wide-angle 135 degree secondary 8MP sensor.
With an f/1.8 aperture, the main camera is a powerful and capable tool in its own right. By employing the second camera, you can better take wide landscape shots or pictures of large groups. Laser and Phase Detect auto focus return to the V20 for pinpoint shooting.
LG have developed SteadyRecord 2.0 for smooth video. Added optical stabilisation is included thanks to this being the first phone to employ Qualcomm's EIS video stabilisation features. This makes for incredibly smooth video recording especially for moving subjects.
Digital Image Stream analysis tracks an object along its line of movement and can use predictive technology to minimise tear and distortion in the finished recording.
The front of the V20 features a wide angle 5 megapixel camera for selfies and video calling.
The original V10's DAC was the gold standard for smartphone audio and things have only got better with the V20. What's better than a single DAC? 2 DACs? How about 4?!
Bang & Olufsen have helped fine tune the audio processing of these and along with a fine 72 stage volume control, the V20 is the phone of choice for audiophiles.
Oh and in a world where the headphone jack is starting to disappear from phones, there's no need to worry. LG include a pair of B&O Play headphones, or you can plug in your favourite pair to enjoy high fidelity audio from local sourced or streaming services.
It's not all about playing audio either. The V20 employs top quality microphones which LG claim to be able to record live concert events without noticeable distortion or clipping.
Returning to the V20 is the secondary screen in the top right corner of the display. This is slightly longer than the original display allowing you to display a personalised signature of up to 24 characters.
You can also customise the second display to show incoming notifications for apps of your choice. There is also the opportunity to add shortcuts to your favourite apps, letting you launch them no matter what else you're doing on the phone.
