The Sony Xperia X is one of the devices to feature in Sony's new X series line. With this new range Sony is bringing curved glass to the whole series along with minimal bezel for a flawless edge to edge design that feels comfortable in your hand.
You would expect Sony to deliver in the camera department and they haven’t disappointed, introducing predictive Hybrid Autofocus. This clever camera technology lets you choose your subject and then predicts its motion, so you can capture the action in perfect focus, free from blur.
If the only camera you have is the one on your phone, Sony want to make sure a Xperia X is the first and only choice for image enthusiasts.
Predictive Hybrid Autofocus and SteadyShot
Sony developed fast Hybrid Autofocus on the Z5 series, capable of focussing in just 0.03 seconds (in accordance with CIPA guidelines). This is made possible with two technologies: contrast-detection for accuracy and phase-detection for speed.
With the Xperia X they have again stepped up in the camera department and introduced Predictive Hybrid Autofocus. This fantastic piece of camera technology has been taken from Sony’s Alpha range of professional cameras. It allows you to choose your subject and then it predicts its motion, so you can capture the action in perfect focus, free from blur.
Combine this with a quick launch time of < 0.03 sec., touch focus capture and this device takes spontaneous capture to another level allowing you to shoot in sharp focus, even in the spur-of-the-moment. This phone delivers a standby to capture time of less than 0.6 seconds
Get closer with Sony's Clear Image Zoom - a 5x lossless digital zoom function that enlarges your view without the usual noise and blurring.
Just like the Z5, the Xperia X has the award-winning G Lens which features a wide-angle 24mm lens to capture as much light as possible and keep everything in frame. This means that Sony still deliver fantastic low-light performance and you will struggle to find any smartphone on the market that beats them in this department.
Have some fun
It's not all about serious technology improvements though, Sony have kept their suite of fun features to use with your camera so you can get creative with your shots.
You can add stickers, doodles and messages with the AR Effect mode, as well as using post editing tools to improve the look of your shots (or the subject!). Try the Style Portrait mode to edit during or after the picture.
Lastly – as you would come to expect with Sony’s Omni-balance design they have kept the dedicated camera button. This almost unique feature in today’s smartphones not only launches the camera application from wherever you may be in the phone but, it also gives you tactile control over taking the picture, getting your hand away from the screen.
Android 6.0 Marshmallow
The latest software from Android comes preloaded on the Xperia X series and with it arrives a host of great features that improve the user interface and user experience.
One main software change is Android 6.0 Marshmallow's new ‘Now on Tap’ feature. All you need to do is just touch and hold the home button of your device and information – as well as apps – will appear depending on what you're reading, watching or listening to.
There have also been improvements in battery optimisation with a new feature called ‘Doze’ and a new app standby aspect. Doze automatically puts your device into a sleep state so it can save battery when the device isn’t in use. Combine this with smarter app standby control which means seldom used apps are not draining your power, so there are some worthwhile battery improvements with Android 6.0.

Security is a necessity on smartphones and the X series has a host of features ensures you can keep your content and personal details safe.
Connect your Xperia X to a PC or Mac and install the Xperia companion software. From here you can locate your phone, make it ring and factory wipe it. You can also ensure the phone is locked down if stolen, making it unable to be unlocked, wiped or information retrieved without access to your personal credentials.
As an extra you can also use the fingerprint sensor, included in the redesigned power button on the right hand side of the phone. Use this to ensure no-one other than you can unlock your phone.
Of course this wouldn't be a flagship smartphone without paying lip-service to the basics. As always with a new Xperia device, Sony have ensured the latest tech is available in the Xperia X.
The 5.0" Full HD 1920 x 1080 display maintains excellent colour reproduction and viewing angles, thanks to Sony's TRILUMINOS and X-Reality processing.
Processing is handled by the latest, top of the range Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 and bolstered with 3GB of RAM. This means high performance use, allowing you to heavily multitask as well as delivering powerful 3D graphics.
As with any top of the range smartphone, you can expect a full range of connectivity options from dual-band Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct Miracast streaming and content sharing, assisted GPS with GLONASS and Beidou support, Bluetooth 4.2 and NFC for one-touchpairing and payments.
The Xperia X has some truly beautiful design features that make it one of the most aesthetic pleasing smartphones on the market today. Firstly the 5.0” Inch Full HD screen curves at the edges of the device slightly so now it feels like a high end device in the palm of your hand. Sony has also given this screen an oleophobic coating to resist fingerprint marks and smudges. This coating also makes the screen much easier to clean so if any smudges do appear they can simply be wiped off without leaving smear marks.
A Fingerprint Sensor is very important for security, but it is also makes using your phone much quicker and much more convenient. This is most definitely the case on the Xperia X as the fingerprint sensor is built into the power key so you can wake up the device and unlock it, all with one press. This is unique in the flagship smartphone space which shows just how much attention Sony is paying to its design.
PS4 Remote Play
