Sony want to make waves in 2015 with the whole Z5 family boasting the world's best smartphone camera. It's getting harder for big manufacturers to make their phones different, so Sony's decision to completely rework a critical component is a welcome move.
Getting the best camera experience is important for a wide range of people. Be it teenagers and clubbers looking for the perfect selfie, or the outdoorsy types among us spending a weekend climbing rolling countryside hills.
If getting the best out of your smartphone's camera is important, Sony want to make sure a phone from the Z5 family is your first choice.
23 Megapixel 1/2.3” Exmor RS™
Making an industry leading camera is no easy feat. Sony have developed new hardware and software technology for the task.
First up is the new 23 Megapixel 1/2.3” Exmor RS™ For Mobile sensor. Picking out more detail than any mobile camera module before, this new sensor can only be found inside Z5 range smartphones.
Sony's G Lens incorporates a wide-angle 24mm lens - this takes in more light than competitors and allows you to frame wide shots with ease. Add to this improvements to the Bionz Digital Image Processing for more realistic colours and noise reduction in a variety of scenarios.
Hybrid Autofocus and SteadyShot
Any modern camera fan will tell you it's not just about hardware, you need decent software to make a good camera too.
Sony have put work in here too, developing the new ultra-fast Hybrid Autofocus. This is capable of focussing in just 0.03 seconds (in accordance with CIPA guidelines) and made possible with two complementary technologies: contrast-detection for accuracy and phase-detection for speed.
Hybrid Autofocus offers you the chance to point and shoot complex landscapes or motion shots faster than ever before. The system also adjusts automatically to keep important subjects clear as you move.
This even happens during 4K video capture, plus SteadyShot technology compensates for movement.
The enhanced Touch Capture function lets you tap anywhere on screen, to immediately focus there and take the shot, all in one single gesture.
Try the new Clear Image Zoom - a 5x lossless digital zoom function. This enlarges your view without the ususal noise and blurring found with digital zooms.
If you thought new phones were all about specifications then think again. Sony have also worked hard to provide a suite of interesting features to play with and accentuate the camera.
The AR Effect mode is great for silly editing - add stickers, doodles and messages, with extra packs available to download from Sony.
Similarly, AR Mask makes use of face-detection so you can swap faces around or cover them with masks before taking the shot - great for having some fun with selfies and group pictures.
Movie Creator can flick through the stored pictures on your phone and create a customisable slideshow based on their date or location when taken. There's also a host of post-editing tools to improve the look of any picture. How about trying the Style Portait mode to edit faces during or after the picture.
Intelligent Auto mode automatically picks a suitable preset scene from dozens, all depending on current environmental factors. There's scope for editing here too; you can modify scenes or individual settings to inject some personality in your pictures.
Lastly - launch the camera swiftly via a dedicated hardware button. Perfect for accessing the camera quickly when you may be doing something else, it also offers tactile control when taking a picture, removing your hand or finger from the screen.
Always striving to be at the front of mobile technology, the Z5 Compact is running Google's most recent 2015 version of Android at launch. Known as 5.1 Lollipop, this means you get the most stable and efficient version of Android to date.
There's also compatibility with Android's main extensions - Android Auto for vehicles and Android Wear for wearables.
Wearables that include Sony's own SmartWatch 3 and SmartBand 2 fitness tracker. There's also complete compatibility with the Google Chromecast streaming stick.
Android Device Manager has provided remote security in Android for some time, although Sony have built on this with their own Xperia protection systems.
If you connect your Z5 Compact to a PC or Mac you will be prompted to install the Xperia companion software. Once connected, as long as your phone is turned on, you can locate it, make it ring, display a message or even factory wipe it.
Best of all you can even ensure the phone is totally locked down if stolen, making it impossible to to be unlocked, wiped or information retrieved without access to your personal credentials.
For some final security, make use of the new fingerprint sensor, built into the redesigned power button on the phone's right side. With this, no-one other than you or trusted others can unlock your phone.
The Compact versions of Sony's Z range smartphones have always been about delivering high specifications in a smaller form factor.
The Z5 Compact continues this tradition, providing a more accessibly-sized smartphone, without compromising on power and functionality.
The 4.6" HD 720 x 1280 provides high quality colour reproduction and viewing angles, and helps to save on battery life when compared to larger, more resource-hungry devices.
Those after something a little larger and more detailed might be interested in the standard Z5. If you want to really push the boat out though, take a look at the incredible 4K-screened Z5 Premium.
Raw processing power is handled by Qualcomm's current Snapdragon 810 and helped out by 2GB of RAM.
The combination creates a worthy experience for power users, allowing for deep multitasking as well as delivering powerful 3D graphics.
As with any top of the range smartphone, you can expect a full range of connectivity options from dual-band Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct Miracast streaming and content sharing, assisted GPS with GLONASS and Beidou support, Bluetooth 4.1, MHL for HDMI output and NFC for one-touchpairing and payments.
PS4 Remote Play
Currently the industry leaders in the global console market, PS4 Remote Play allows you to stream content from your PS4 directly to your phone screen.
This can be anything from stored videos or music to fully installed PS4 games!
If someone else needs the TV, you can continue the action on your Xperia Z5 Compact smartphone.
The Dualshock 4 controller can be paired directly to any Xperia Z range device, and you can use the GCM10 Game Control Mount to hold the phone in a comfortable playing position.
Note - for best performance, PS4 Remote Play is recommended to be run on the same network, with the PS4 system having a wired LAN connection to the Internet.
Please Note: The Xperia Z5 Compact is waterproof and protected against dust, so don’t worry if you get caught in the rain or want to wash off dirt under a tap, but remember: all ports and attached covers should be firmly closed.
You should not put the device completely underwater or expose it to seawater, salt water, chlorinated water or liquids such as drinks. Abuse and improper use of device will invalidate warranty. The device has Ingress Protection rating IP65/68.
