Fairphone 4 (5G)

Really loving my Fairphone 4 - beautiful screen, takes amazing pictures! Fast and sleek, feels good in the hand. I appreciate the easy-access case, and the dark green color is really nice! Feels different than every other white or black brick I've had.

[Update: May 22, '26] - Happy to confirm, four years later, that my FP4 is still going strong! Switched it over to Murena's /e/os to get rid of Google bloat & haven't missed it. My phone is *still* super fast, after many system updates, & the battery still lasts days. I never bought a case (because I'm cheap), & have dropped it plenty, but the only damage I've managed to inflict has been some chips off the back cover (the only part I've had to replace, yet; ~$30 + shipping) and a single hairline crack across the middle of the screen (>1 yr ago, hasn't spread or chipped. Can you spot it in the selfie shot? ;) Pls excuse the water marks on my mirror).

All phones should be built like this.

I have been a huge fan of the Fairphone project from its beginnings, with its ambition of a truly ethical and sustainable phone. But since I live in Australia I've only been able to admire from afar. Clove Technology made it possible for me to actually order (and afford) an Fairphone 4. I knew that I probably wouldn't be able to register the phone for extended warranty, but that's okay because it is so repairable. Delivery was amazingly quick and I'm really happy with the phone. It works perfectly with the network here and is a pleasure to use. The only minor problem is the lack of a 3.5mm headphone jack as I prefer using wired headphones, but as there are other options (e.g. DAC dongles) this is only one tiny negative in a bucket load of positives.

This review is mainly regarding the service provided by Clove Technologies and their partner DHL.
I'm not really going to rate the device, more reasons further down.
I ordered the device on, I think it was a Friday, and received it on Monday. Seems pretty normal, but with regards that the delivery location was Melbourne, Australia, this is pretty impressive! No additional taxes applied, as GST for consumers is calculated up to a product value of AUD1000.
Now to the phone.
Whoever experienced a device using Blackberry OS10, knows what is possible in terms of Mobile OS. Unfortunately, neither iOS nor Android can match nowadays the level Blackberry set back in 2014 with OS10. Therefore I can't rate the phone's OS. The phone itself works and does what it has to do. I do games or other intensive tasks, therefore it totally fits it's purpose. So far nothing to complain. And knowing to do good to the environment and fellow people, this alone is reason enough to get a Fairphone and rate it a 5/5!

I've been using this phone in Ontario, Canada for a few weeks now and I'm really enjoying the experience. Shipping was great, the product is exactly as described. The phone works great with the Freedom cell network; just swapped my sim card over from my old phone. Had a hard time finding a wallet phone case that worked for this new phone, but that is not a problem that most other people will have. Next I need to update my headphones.

Forced to replace my LG V20, the Fairphone 4 is the only viable option I found. Thankfully, it was easy to setup in the USA on T-Mobile. I have had minor issues with the mic, but the hardware test resolved it. Otherwise, a great device!

I am happy with the product and the service I received with Clove. For any other Canadian wishing to order a Fairphone 4, everything went smoothly, the phone works well on Bell network and I paid 144$ for customs. The phone seems sturdy but as I intend to keep it a long long while and I am looking for a case. I recommend ordering said case at the same time as the phone as they are pretty much non existent on this side of the ocean.

I've had the Fairphone 4 for about 4 weeks. If any fellow Canadians were wondering, it cost me $106 in import fees. The process for paying was very easy. DHL sent a link, I made the payment online and the phone was delivered. The phone works perfectly on the FIZZ network in Canada.
The phone felt a bit heavy at first but I've gotten used to it. It feels very solid and I don't feel the need to have a protective case unlike my previous Motorola made completely of glass phone.
I unlocked the bootloader and flashed /e/OS. It was easy to unlock the bootloader by getting the code from the Fairphone website. So far the battery has been lasting 6-7 days! I wouldn't say I'm a heavy user though and I don't install many apps. I'm very happy with the phone.

Great phone with excellent build quality and no bloatware. Very happy to have a user repairable phone.
Delivery was super fast even though I am on the other side of the world. No additional case is required for this phone.

Great phone with more than good enough specs for anything I need to do with it. Works perfectly in Canada on Virgin/Bell. It’s definitely a heavy one, but I don’t mind that. One nit-pick is that the OS is missing a few features I love from my last Android (being able to limit the charge to 80% and swap the back and task-view buttons), but hopefully, that will be fixed in an update.

A confession - the Fairphone 4 is my first smartphone, replacing an ancient Sony-Ericsson - so I can't compare it to other smartphones.

I'm very happy with the phone (I bought the 256GB + 8GB RAM model) and so far have found it very good.

I hadn't read the specifications properly so I was surprised to find that the second SIM was an eSIM, which did make things a bit more complicated (but not impossible) and it will probably be a better bet in the long term.

Great phone, ticks all the boxes. Works great with a custom ROM as well. I will never get an iPhone again.
Clove Tech gave me next day delivery which was far better than waiting months for the fairphone store delivery.

Good experience so far. Really like the 5 year warranty, repair-ability and ethical sourcing. Lacks headphone jack and indicator LED so I invested in bluetooth headset which works fine.

Really like the Fairphone 4, like the camera, spec, etc. Everything I need.
With the software updates the camera is now really good, compared to the reviews in Autumn last year.

Coming from a Fairphone 2 which had a flimsy back cover the 4 feels much more solid like the old FP1. I hope the FP4 lasts as long as Fairphone say it should. Fingerprint scanner is great and saves punching the screen to unlock. Battery life seems very good. My only reservations - it's rather heavy and I am not sure the larger screen is necessary. There's no headphone jack, instead an adapter is required. Also no notification light which the older models had. But these are minor issues on what feels a solid and capable handset.

This UK Seller knocked weeks of the delivery time from the manufacturer if this excellent product. Despite pandemic inertia, it now enables me to get familiar with the product before some early outdoor zoom sessions in February.

Having never come across Clove before I was, I admit, nervous about ordering - however, noone else had the product I wanted in stock. The order process was slick, the product was in stock, and delivered rapidly - so all in all good service from Clove, and I would be happy to order again. The Fairphone is a sustainable product - highly recommended.
