Can You Turn Off AI on iPhone, Galaxy or Pixel? What You Can and Can’t Control

Can You Turn Off AI on iPhone, Galaxy or Pixel? What You Can and Can’t Control

Yes, you can turn off or restrict many AI features on iPhone, Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel, including Siri AI, Galaxy AI features and Gemini. However, you cannot completely remove AI from a modern smartphone. Machine learning can remain embedded in functions such as photography, voice recognition, security, predictive typing and other parts of the operating system.

A few years ago, avoiding artificial intelligence on your smartphone was relatively straightforward. If you didn't want an AI chatbot, you didn't install one. If you didn't use a voice assistant, you could disable it. Artificial intelligence felt like a feature you consciously chose to use rather than part of the phone itself.

That distinction is disappearing.

Following Apple's latest software releases, Siri AI can now use personal context, understand what's on screen and surface relevant information from messages, emails and photos. Apple describes the new assistant as part of a broader generation of Apple Intelligence capabilities integrated across its devices and apps. Google has continued integrating Gemini with Android, where it can act as the phone's primary assistant and interact with device functions and connected apps. Samsung, meanwhile, has expanded Galaxy AI across translation, writing, image editing and other everyday functions.

That raises a more important question than whether your next phone has AI: how much control do you have over it, but control isn't the only question surrounding smartphone AI. There is also the emerging question of whether the AI features included with your phone will remain free.

Why Is It Becoming Harder to Turn AI Off on a Smartphone?

Turning off AI is becoming more complicated because a modern smartphone does not contain one identifiable "AI feature". Artificial intelligence and machine learning now operate at several different layers of the device, from obvious generative assistants to less visible technologies involved in photography, speech recognition, typing and security.

The most visible layer is easy to recognise. Siri AI, Gemini and Galaxy AI announce themselves as intelligent features. You deliberately ask a question, request a summary, translate a conversation, generate content or edit an image. These are usually the features people have in mind when they say they want to "turn AI off".

But underneath those features sits another layer of machine learning. Your camera may analyse a scene before producing a photograph. Your keyboard may predict what you're about to type. Your phone may identify spam, transcribe speech or organise photographs according to their contents. Some of these capabilities existed long before manufacturers began putting "AI" prominently into smartphone marketing.

That creates an important distinction: turning off an AI assistant is not the same as turning your smartphone into an AI-free device.

What Does "Turning Off AI" Actually Mean?

For most smartphone users, "turning off AI" can mean several very different things. You may want to stop an AI assistant appearing when you press a button, prevent generative features from accessing particular information, restrict AI requests from being processed in the cloud, stop conversations being stored, or remove artificial intelligence from the phone altogether.

Those objectives require different controls.

It is therefore more useful to think about smartphone AI in layers. The first is AI you deliberately interact with, such as Gemini or Siri AI. The second is generative and intelligent features integrated into applications, such as writing tools, summaries, translation and generative photo editing. The third is underlying machine learning built into the smartphone experience, which may operate without the user ever opening an AI assistant.

You can exercise considerable control over the first two layers. The third is much harder to eliminate.

That means an AI "off" switch increasingly means "stop this particular AI experience" rather than "remove artificial intelligence from my smartphone."

Can You Turn Off AI on an iPhone?

Yes. You can disable Siri AI on supported iPhones, and Apple currently allows users to switch back to Siri Classic if they want the previous Siri experience. Turning off Siri AI, however, does not remove every machine-learning function used elsewhere on the iPhone.

Apple's current iOS 27 guidance provides a particularly interesting level of control. Users can turn Siri off completely, while those who have Siri AI but prefer the previous assistant can select Siri Classic instead. Apple also provides separate controls over how Siri is activated, including voice activation and the side button.

That distinction has become more significant with Apple's newest generation of Siri. The company says Siri AI can use personal-context understanding to find relevant information across messages, emails, photos and more, while also understanding information displayed onscreen and taking actions across apps.

For someone who wants an iPhone but does not want that level of AI assistance, there is therefore meaningful choice. You can restrict or disable the visible AI experience without abandoning the iPhone itself.

What you cannot do is make iOS stop using every technology that might reasonably be described as machine learning. Apple has used machine learning throughout the iPhone experience for years, including in features that existed long before Apple Intelligence became a consumer-facing brand.

Turning off Siri AI should therefore be understood as turning off Siri AI, not removing all AI from an iPhone.

Can You Turn Off Galaxy AI on a Samsung Phone?

You can disable or avoid individual Galaxy AI features and Samsung also provides a setting that restricts supported Galaxy AI functions to on-device processing. Some features will stop working when cloud processing is disabled because they require an online service.

Samsung's approach is slightly different because Galaxy AI is better understood as a collection of capabilities than as one single assistant. Current Galaxy devices can use AI for functions including translation, writing assistance, summaries and image editing, although availability varies by model and software version.

Samsung provides a particularly useful control for people whose primary concern is where their information is processed. Under Galaxy AI settings, supported devices offer Process data only on device, which Samsung describes as a master control for preventing Galaxy AI features from using cloud-based processing. Functions that depend on the cloud consequently become unavailable.

This demonstrates why "Can I turn Galaxy AI off?" and "Can I stop Galaxy AI sending information to the cloud?" are not necessarily the same question.

Some users may want neither. Others may be comfortable using AI provided processing stays on their device. Another group may want the full functionality, including cloud-dependent features.

That makes control over how AI operates more useful than a simple on/off distinction.

Can You Turn Off Gemini on Google Pixel?

Yes. Android currently allows you to stop Gemini acting as your default digital assistant, switch back to Google Assistant on supported configurations, select another assistant or set the default digital assistant to None. You can also remove the Gemini mobile app, although deleting the app alone does not necessarily remove Gemini as the phone's default assistant.

That last distinction is easy to miss.

A user could delete the Gemini application believing they have removed Gemini from their Android experience while leaving the device's assistant configuration unchanged. Google therefore provides separate settings for the application itself and for the phone's default digital assistant.

Users can also change how Gemini is activated. Google's current controls include removing it from the power-button shortcut, disabling voice activation and preventing Gemini from being used from the lock screen.

Pixel makes this discussion particularly interesting because Gemini is increasingly connected to Android itself. Google's Device assistance integration allows Gemini to perform tasks such as managing alarms, opening apps, reading or replying to notifications, controlling media and changing certain settings. Google says Device assistance can work even when Gemini's Keep Activity setting is off, although the connection itself can be disabled separately.

This is another example of why turning off one AI setting does not necessarily turn off every AI-related capability.

What AI Can You Turn Off on iPhone, Galaxy and Pixel?

The practical answer is that all three platforms give users meaningful control over their most visible AI experiences, but the controls operate differently.

What can you control? iPhone Samsung Galaxy Google Pixel
Main AI assistant Siri AI can be disabled; Siri Classic is available on supported configurations Depends on assistant configuration Gemini can be replaced or no default assistant selected
Individual AI features Many features have their own controls Galaxy AI features can be managed individually Gemini and connected functionality can be managed
Cloud AI processing Depends on the Apple Intelligence feature Supported Galaxy AI processing can be restricted to the device Depends on Gemini feature and connected service
AI activity/history Depends on the Apple service or feature Depends on feature/service Gemini Keep Activity can be turned off
Remove every form of machine learning No No No
Use the phone without routinely interacting with generative AI Yes Yes Yes

The important takeaway isn't that one platform is universally "more controllable" than another. Apple, Samsung and Google structure their AI systems differently, so the relevant question is which controls matter to you.

Someone primarily concerned about cloud processing may care about a different setting from someone who simply doesn't want an assistant responding when they press the power button. Someone else may want AI photography and translation but have no interest in allowing an assistant to interact with emails or messages.

AI controls are therefore becoming something worth considering before buying a smartphone, rather than something users discover after setting one up.

What Still Uses AI After You Turn Siri AI, Galaxy AI or Gemini Off?

Turning off the obvious AI features does not automatically disable every machine-learning system operating on a modern smartphone.

Photography is perhaps the clearest example. The photograph produced when you press the shutter can involve computational processing, scene analysis, noise reduction, HDR decisions and the combination of multiple exposures. Increasingly sophisticated image processing has been part of smartphone photography for years.

Machine-learning techniques may also contribute to speech recognition, predictive typing, photo organisation, accessibility functions, security systems and unwanted-call or spam detection. Exactly which technologies are used varies between manufacturers and devices, and it would be misleading to describe every automated smartphone function as AI.

Nevertheless, the broader distinction remains:

You can turn off AI as an interface much more easily than you can turn off AI as infrastructure.

That is arguably the more consequential smartphone change taking place in 2026.

Does Turning Off AI Stop Your Phone Sending Data to the Cloud?

No. Turning off an AI assistant does not automatically stop your smartphone sending data to cloud services. Backups, email, messaging, photo syncing, search and other online services operate independently. However, disabling specific AI features, permissions or cloud processing can reduce the information sent to AI services.

Samsung provides a straightforward example. Enabling Process data only on device prevents supported Galaxy AI functionality from using cloud processing, but it obviously does not transform a connected Galaxy phone into an offline device.

Gemini provides another useful example because Google separates use of the assistant from the storage of activity. When Keep Activity is enabled, Gemini activity is stored in the user's Google Account. Google allows users to turn this setting off or choose to turn it off and delete existing activity.

Google says that when Keep Activity is disabled, future conversations do not appear in Gemini Apps Activity and are not used to train its AI models unless the user chooses to submit feedback. Google nevertheless retains those conversations for up to 72 hours for purposes including providing the service, processing feedback and safety.

This distinction matters because AI controls, privacy controls and data-retention controls overlap, but they are not the same thing.

We'll explore that issue more deeply in our forthcoming guide, Is Smartphone AI Actually Private? What Happens to Your Data When You Use Siri, Gemini or Galaxy AI?

Can You Stop Smartphone AI Accessing Your Photos, Messages and Other Apps?

You can restrict some forms of access, but the available controls depend on the platform, assistant, permissions and connected services involved.

This question has become particularly relevant following Apple's latest Siri AI rollout. Apple says Siri AI can draw on personal context to surface relevant information from a user's messages, emails and photos and can take actions across apps. That capability is part of what makes the new assistant more useful, but it also changes what consumers need to understand about their AI settings.

On Android, Gemini uses connected services and device permissions to extend what the assistant can do. Google's Device assistance integration, for example, can interact with alarms, notifications, media and device settings, and users can disconnect that integration.

For privacy-conscious users, therefore, simply asking "Is AI turned on?" is becoming less informative than asking "What can this AI access?"

The relevant controls increasingly concern scope: which apps the assistant can interact with, which information it can use, whether processing happens locally or remotely and whether resulting activity is retained.

Does Turning Off AI Save Battery Life?

Turning off particular AI features may reduce some processing, network use or background activity, but there is no reliable rule that disabling smartphone AI will produce a significant increase in battery life.

The effect depends on the feature. An AI assistant you rarely activate may account for very little of your daily battery consumption, while a heavily used real-time AI function could require considerably more processing. On-device and cloud-based features can also impose different demands on the handset.

Display brightness, poor mobile signal, gaming, navigation, video recording and conventional background applications may have a much larger effect on daily battery performance than an AI feature that is rarely used.

Modern flagship smartphones also increasingly contain dedicated hardware for machine-learning workloads. Turning off Gemini, Siri AI or a Galaxy AI feature does not remove that hardware or necessarily stop every system-level machine-learning process.

If battery life is your motivation, check the phone's actual battery-usage data rather than assuming AI off = longer battery life.

Does Turning Off AI Free Up Storage?

Not necessarily. On-device generative AI can require local models and supporting files, but disabling an AI feature and deleting the files associated with it are not necessarily the same operation.

The behaviour varies by operating system, software release and individual feature. A switch that prevents an AI capability from operating does not automatically guarantee that all associated assets will be deleted. Similarly, uninstalling a visible assistant application does not necessarily remove machine-learning components belonging to the operating system.

This is particularly relevant as more AI processing moves onto the device. Local processing can offer privacy and responsiveness advantages, but the models required to provide those capabilities need somewhere to live.

If storage is your reason for disabling AI, check the device's storage allocation afterwards rather than assuming the space will automatically be reclaimed.

Can You Buy a Smartphone Without AI in 2026?

You can buy and use a smartphone without making generative AI a significant part of your experience, but finding a genuinely AI-free modern smartphone is much harder.

Even a device without a heavily marketed generative assistant may use machine learning for photography, voice recognition, keyboard predictions, accessibility, security or other system functions. Moving to a basic or highly simplified phone may eliminate many of these capabilities, but it also means giving up functionality most people now associate with smartphones.

This suggests that the idea of an "AI-free smartphone" may eventually need a more useful definition.

For most buyers, the practical goal isn't eliminating every algorithm that could be classified as artificial intelligence. It is deciding which AI they want to interact with, what information it can access, where that information is processed and what happens to the resulting data.

Those are choices consumers can realistically make.

Which Smartphone Gives You the Most Control Over AI?

There is no useful universal answer because iPhone, Galaxy and Pixel provide different kinds of control.

Apple currently allows users to disable Siri AI or return to Siri Classic. Samsung allows users to manage Galaxy AI features and provides a dedicated option to keep supported processing on-device. Google gives Android users extensive control over Gemini's assistant role, activation methods, Connected Apps and activity settings.

Which approach matters most depends on what you're trying to control.

A user concerned about cloud processing may prioritise on-device options. Someone concerned about personal information may focus on permissions, connected applications and activity retention. Someone who simply doesn't like generative assistants may care primarily about whether the assistant can be disabled without affecting the rest of the smartphone experience.

So rather than asking which manufacturer gives you the "least AI", ask:

Which phone gives me control over the parts of AI I care about?

That is a much more useful buying question.

So, How Much AI Can You Really Turn Off?

You can turn off a substantial amount of visible AI on iPhone, Galaxy and Pixel, but you cannot realistically remove every form of artificial intelligence or machine learning from a modern smartphone.

On iPhone, Siri AI can be disabled and eligible users can return to Siri Classic. On Galaxy devices, individual AI functionality can be controlled and supported cloud processing can be restricted to the device. On Pixel and Android, Gemini can be removed as the default assistant, its activation methods changed and its connected functionality and activity settings managed.

What remains is the less visible layer of machine learning woven into the modern smartphone experience.

That means the question consumers need to ask is changing.

It is no longer simply:

"Does this phone have AI?"

Almost every major smartphone does.

The better question in 2026 is:

"How much control will this phone give me over the AI it uses?"

As AI becomes as fundamental to smartphones as cameras, processors and operating systems, that question could become an increasingly important part of choosing which phone to buy next.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I completely turn off AI on my iPhone?

You can turn off Siri AI and Apple provides controls over other Apple Intelligence experiences, but doing so does not remove every machine-learning technology used by iOS. Apple's current iOS 27 documentation also allows eligible users to switch from Siri AI to Siri Classic.

Can I turn off Siri AI but keep normal Siri?

Yes. Apple currently provides a Use Siri Classic option for users who have Siri AI but want to return to the previous version of Siri.

Can I use a Samsung Galaxy without Galaxy AI?

Yes. You do not have to actively use Galaxy AI features to use a Galaxy smartphone. Samsung also allows users to manage AI functionality and restrict supported Galaxy AI features to on-device processing, although some cloud-dependent features will then be unavailable.

Can I completely turn off Galaxy AI?

Galaxy AI consists of multiple features rather than one universal assistant, so control is feature-dependent. Samsung also provides a Process data only on device setting that disables cloud processing for supported Galaxy AI features.

Can I remove Gemini from Google Pixel?

Yes. Google allows users to delete the Gemini mobile app, change their default assistant, switch to Google Assistant on supported configurations or select no default digital assistant. Deleting the Gemini app alone does not automatically change the default assistant setting.

Can I use Android without Gemini?

Yes. Google's current Android settings allow users to change or remove Gemini as their default digital assistant. Other Android functions that use machine learning will still remain.

Does turning off Gemini delete my previous conversations?

No. Switching away from or deleting Gemini does not automatically delete activity already stored in your Google Account. Google provides separate controls for reviewing and deleting Gemini Apps Activity.

Does turning off Gemini stop Google storing my AI chats?

You need to manage Keep Activity separately. When it is off, Google says future chats won't appear in your Gemini Apps Activity and won't be used to train its AI models unless you submit feedback, although conversations can still be retained for up to 72 hours for specified service and safety purposes.

Does turning off AI improve battery life?

It may reduce the resources used by particular AI functions, but it does not guarantee a significant improvement in battery life. The effect depends on the feature, how frequently it was used and whether processing happened locally or remotely.

Does turning off AI remove AI models from my phone?

Not necessarily. Disabling a feature and removing its associated local models can be separate processes, and behaviour differs between operating systems and individual AI features.

Can I buy a smartphone without AI?

You can avoid many generative-AI experiences, but completely avoiding machine learning on a modern smartphone is difficult. Cameras, keyboards, speech systems, security features and other functions can use machine learning even when the main AI assistant is disabled.
