In 2013 the G2 was launched and at the time the unique design and software features set the phone apart from the competition.

3 years on and 3 generations of the premium G device later, we have the G5, which stays true to the ethos of the G2.

The LG G5 is, without doubt, a premium, flagship smartphone that will appeal to those who need or desire the best in a mobile.

2016 marks a time for refinement to the design rather than considerable differences in the overall look and feel, but it does have a full metal design. Corners are a little more rounded and everything looks refreshed.

The iconic rear mounted volume keys have been moved to the side of the device; in their place on the back of the phone is a circular fingerprint reader for added security, stopping unwanted users gaining access to your phone. This doubles as a clickable power button.

The ability to remove and replace the battery and expand the internal memory via a microSD memory card is retained.

Modular Type

Interchangable modules with a slide-out battery offers a range of different accessories to enhance and expand the LG G5. These include the LG Cam Plus and LG Hi-Fi Plus.

The G5 does have a small change in the camera department; instead of the single 16 megapixel lens, another 8 megapixel module has been added for an improved camera experience and a field of view stretching to 135 degrees.

Just like the G4, the camera is designed to be amongst the best, if not the best, available on a phone today.

The G4 set a high bar so thankfully the G5 is set to continue this high standard.

The aperture on the camera allows for lots of light to be let in and capture stunning images be those in bright or low light conditions, so you get the very best record of the moment.

Lots of very clever algorithms and software works in conjunction with the hardware to produce results that exceed that of many point and shoot cameras.

The advanced camera app offers lots of control allowing you to get that perfect shot. Autofocus for the simple point and shoot user is there, but if you want to get a bit more control change settings like the ISO, White Balance and more. You can even capture in RAW for the most versatile of post capture editing.

OIS 2.0 (Optical Image Stabilisition) is built into the device too, so whether it is you or the subject that is moving, there should be less evidence of shake and that ‘blur’ that comes as a result of movement.

The G5 also sports excellent zoom capabilities from 0.5X to 8.0X and you can take a variety of photos from a tight close-up to a vast scene by simply pinching the screen.

Pop-out Picture offers the ability to take both a standard and wide angle photo at the same time. 4 photo-frame background effects, Fisheye, B&W, Vignetter and Lens Blur are provided.

To the front the LG G5 packs an 8 megapixel selfie camera. This is perfect for video calls and selfie shots with as much detail as possible.

With Gesture Interval Shot you can snap four great shots two seconds apart and pick the best. Your only issue now might be choosing the best one!

The LG G5 boasts a beautiful 5.3" IPS Screen. This is rated Quad HD (1440 x 2560 pixels) and provides an incredible 554 Pixels Per Inch (PPI).

Needless to say with such a resolution you can expect sharp, vibrant and crisp images and this is exactly what you get. Whether the G5 is a full arm's length away from you or just a few inches, all content, but particularly media, such as photos and videos, are immersive.

Whilst this can take a toll on the battery, being an IPS panel the power drain is optimised and battery saving technology within Android also helps you to work and enjoy the screen for longer.

The display also benefits from In-cell Touch Display technology. This helps to deliver a smooth and responsive feel as well as making the screen more visible in daylight.

A small but significant addition is a feature called Always-ON which extends your ability to interact with the G5. At any time you can glance at the screen to see key notifications.

RAM & Memory

Powering the LG G5 is a 2.15 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 Processor, matched up with 4GB of RAM.

Simply put, if this does not produce the performance you need or want from a smartphone then you are unlikely to find better. Be it multi-taking, gaming, or just intense use, the G5 will power through and show little in the way of performance issues even under the intense use scenarios.

Out of the box you get 32GB of storage built into the handset, which can be expanded with a microSD card - up to a theoretical limit of 2 Terabytes, but at the moment, 200GB is the largest available memory card. Even if you like to carry lots of photos, videos, movies, music and documents, this should be more than enough.

There are always additional services such as cloud storage and streaming which are easily accessible with the 4G Cat6 or WiFi connectivity.

Android OS

The world's most popular mobile operating system is available in its newest iteration, 6.0 Marshmallow.

Further refining an already capable and powerful OS, one of the key features is ‘Doze’ that intelligently saves battery usage when the device and apps are not in use.

You will see excellent screen usage at all times, even when you take into account all the great features.

An additional benefit includes the ability to control the permissions of applications, so you remain in the control; turn app permissions off and on when you want, rather than when the app suggests is best.

Being an Android smartphone you, of course, have access to Google's full suite of applications and Google Play for downloading more. Enjoy Gmail, Drive, Maps, Calendar, Translate and more including Google Play Games, Books, Music & Movies.

On top of the Android system, LG employ their own UI, customising the interface to craft something personal and unique to their smartphones.

The new LG UI 5.0 has been designed to stay well within the ideals of Google's Material Design - so it, and the built-in apps it runs, look similar to other Android 6.0 devices - however there are a number of LG's own features and extras to make it unique.

You also have a level of customisation over the interface that is not present on other Android phones, being able to choose complete themes for the phone, rework the soft navigation bar with extra shortcuts and even change the system font.

In the modern world of smartphones there are so many ways for you to stay connected.

With the LG G5 you have the ability to connect to 4G / LTE for super-fast downloading of music and streaming. When a mobile network isn't available the dual band (2.4 / 5 GHz) WiFi connection steps in and can also be used to connect to other devices.

With wearable devices, such as the Android Wear powered LG G Watch Urbane, Bluetooth bridges both and also allows you to connect to external audio and visual equipment.

NFC comes as standard for one-touch pairing with accessories or setting up contactless payments (payment provider dependant).

USB connectivity on the G5 is via a USB Type-C connector that also support Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 enabling a charge time 27% faster and 45% more efficient than the previous generation.

To get everything done the LG G5 packs in a user removable 2,800mAh battery which should keep your powered for long enough. Should you need more, or are away from power for extended periods, it is simple to replace, no need to remove the back cover to replace it, simply slide it in and out.

As you can see the LG G5 is a very capable and desirable smartphone. Buy yours SIM free from Clove today.

Has LG got it right with their new LG G5 design? I thinks so.
After much talk about the new modular design of the G5, I can say for myself as a NEW OWNER, that LG have got it right.

I'm off contract and I purchased a G5 Titan sim free. at £529 that came with free LG B&O H3 in-ear headphones.

The LG G5 is one phone that can change into many with the add-ons like LG Hi-Fi Plus with B&O PLAY and LG CAM - Plus, will make the phone stand out even more.

Positives with the new G5 are?
That this phone will allow you to grow and expand not just with the add-ons from LG Friends Family whish are great but a little expensive. But also with the ability to expand the phones memory from 32BG up to 200 GB with the use of the microSD card slot. Plus you also have the ability to swap-out the phone's battery, if needed. With a spare battery you can always make sure that your have power when needed. Just these two abilities on there own make the phone worth having. Plus the G5's power and design make this a flagship mobile phone worth having and I think well above the Samsung Galaxy S7!

    Negatives of the G5 are?
Well there aren't many, but over the last 48 hours I've been putting my new G5 through the test. I've changed and played around with most of the phones settings and the G5 hasn't fallen over once. However, what I have noticed is the the fingerprint sensor on my G5 stops working if the phone is either in long periods of standby or when the phone is switched off and then back on.
Yes the G5 fingerprint sensor will not operate first time when the phone is turned on. This is a design security feature. But I have also found that my G5 fingerprint sensor has to be reset by deleting the existing fingerprints and re add them, otherwise they will not work. Then the sensor works for the rest of the day. This may be sorted out with an update for the G5.
The other issue be it a small one is the modular design of the G5. The 2 parts of the phone that separate don't provide a smooth finish when locked back with each other. On my G5 I have one side of the phone where it comes apart higher than the other side. It's not much but you just feel it every time I hold the phone in my hand, it's not a all smooth finish. Thoughts on this are - If you design a phone that has a feature that comes apart make sure that they totally go back together with a all smooth finish, otherwise it makes the phone feel cheap and not a flagship that it is.

I rate this 4.5 out of 5 - It's the fingerprint sensor and the not all smooth finish that just let's it down for me.

This, phone is amazing. I have had this phone for almost 3 weeks now and can definitely say it is fast (thanks to the Qualcomm 820 SOC and 4GB RAM), comfortable to use even with one hand and the camera is awesome, I dare say better than my wife's G4, even though they are supposed to be the same 16MP.

All my friends were amazed when I showed them the removable battery feature. Speaking of battery, battery life is actually excellent and with quick charging built-in, the battery charges from 10% to 100% in approx 1 hour.

Besides the removable battery, one things I have not seen on any other phone, the glass seems to have some finger/mark-proof layer, even my friends commented on this, the glass stays clean with no fingerprints or smudges, even when used with dirty hands.

I am still not sure whether I will root and mod the phone as I really like to double tap to wake/lock feature, something which is not featured in cyanogenmod roms (which I like a lot), though will probably still mod it in a couple of months time.

To say it all, the design is not the best, I prefer the G4's design to be honest, but overall you cannot say that this is an ugly phone.

Definitely a phone to recommend to your friends/family.

It's my 2nd LG from G-series. I had the 1st one for 4 months and then cracked it badly. Bought cheap Motorola Moto G instead (1st gen) and after a few months I realized I need a phone than performs. Sony Xperia Z3 was my phone for ~1 year and I loved it...until I cracked the back glass which costed 65 EUR. Then I decided to buy a phone with metal back cover. Fell in love with Huawei Mate S after it was revealed - pre-ordered it immediately. What can I say - I owned it for 3 months and loved the design. Unfortunately, its battery life and performance were super-depressive. I don't change my phones that often, but hating Huawei so much and LG G5 announcement were enough for me to pre-order it. My wife owns LG G4 and loves it, so I was sure G5 would be a good device to have.

After owning it for ~2 weeks I can say that it's a very good phone. It's very fast - I couldn't face a single glitch during this time even though I usually have tons of browser tabs and some other apps open. Screen is great as you might expect with such resolution. I can say that the fingerprint scanner works well - it's slower than the one you find in Huawei (they have the fastest scanners), but it reads my finger properly in 19 out of 20 cases. For Huawei it was more like 50/50.

But is it perfect? Nope, I wouldn't say so. First of all - the battery life is quite low. It's maybe 50% better than in Huawei, but 2 times worse than in Sony. What doesn't add confidence here is that new USB Type-C port. Don't get me wrong - it's better than Micro USB, but the downside is that I have just one cable for it, so need to buy another one for my car and office so I don't have to bring it from home every day I don't feel confidence that the phone would survive. It manages to last for the whole day in most cases though.

Another tiny drawback for me is build quality. It's make in Korea by the way, but Huawei looks better from any angle. And the phone itself is a bit slippery - should be careful on the street.

I would put 4.5 stars, but since I have to choose between 4 and 5 - I put 4. If the phone had better battery - I would put 5 instantly.

Am I happy with my choice? Yes. Would I buy another phone if I knew about the battery? Probably now, as I don't like Samsung, new Sony phones have too small screens, HTC usually falls apart quickly, Huawei is just horrible. For me it was an obvious choice.
